League Match Reports

 (The Barney Eastwood League Cup)

League 1

  -  Orient Star 3 Vs 5 C.B. Archers  -

Wednesday 12th August 2009

Orient Bar

“Order please. Man going in.”

The Divis Darts League sponsored by Ladbrookes.com is back

for another year; and so are the CB Archers. In their debut season

the Archers walked off with four trophies, three runners-up spots and

narrowly lost out to the Sliabh Dubh - current league champions

 - in a play-off for the league title. Last season there was no Archer’s

team but now they’ve returned with a bigger and better squad.

Wednesday night and the Archers visited the Orient bar on the

Springfield road. The Archers’ Brian McKinney and Davey

McCusker of the Orient had the unenviable task of kicking off this

season’s campaign first match up. It’s been a few weeks since

Brian troubled-the-trebles and nerves were very evident in his

inconsistent darts; as likely to hit a ton as hit the ref! The three legs all

went to the double but checkouts are the important darts and

Davey had two more than Brian, winning 2-1.

Next up for the Archers was Gaz O’Reilly. The southpaw got

off to a flyer winning the first leg in 24 darts on a 72 checkout.

Although Gaz was notching up the ton count his opponent,

Jay Moore, was gradually finding his range and after a couple of

on-the-wire misses from Gaz, Jay took the game 2-1.

The pressure was building as Kevin O’Reilly Jnr stepped up to the

oche against Cricky Magee. Kevin has so often been the nearly

man but tonight he entertained the Orient crowd with a top quality

display of throwing, winning the first leg in 17 darts. Cricky is

one-to-watch and he fought back to level the game 1-1.

At this point it looked like the Archers would go 3 down but

Kevin held his nerve and closed out the decider in 24 darts.

John Black is a new player for the Archers this season and he was

up against Geordie Bolton Jnr, his team mate from last year.

John has only recently returned to the darts world after a 14 year

lay off and there were flashes of his talent all through the game;

he’ll be hard to beat when it all comes together. Playing your

former team mate at their home venue can be a daunting task but

John’s experience was enough to help him to a 2-1 win.

The fifth game saw Kevin O’Reilly Snr hoping to edge the Archers

in front against Brian McLaughlin. Kevin is a former North Belfast

Champion and he still has a keen eye after all these years. A classic

throwing technique and consistent scoring brought Kevin the win by

2 legs to 0.

The Archers were hoping Marty Currie would continue the fine form

he showed in the recent West Belfast Open tournament but it

didn’t look likely when Anto Moore took the first leg for the Orient.

Marty is a cool player and didn’t allow himself to be affected by that

early set back and plugged away to take a from-behind win 2-1.

That secured at least a point for the Archers.

Another former Orient player making his debut for the Archers was

Billy Davidson. Billy was always under the cosh against Liam Miller,

a very capable thrower, and no matter how much Billy tried he came up

 short losing 2-0.

That left Kevin Mezza the task of securing all the points for the

Archers if he could get the win over Joe Miller Snr. Kevin had also

shown good form in the West Belfast Open and he steamed ahead

bagging a couple of tons and a 140 to win the first leg. Joe snatched

the second leg when Kevin took his foot off the gas but it was

business as usual in the third leg with Kevin hitting another 140 to

take the leg, game and match for the Archers. 5-3 Archers.

It’s a long season in the Divis league and this was a good, if not nervy,

 start for the Archers.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin O’Reilly Jnr; a fantastic display of

high scoring and tight finishing.

League 2

-  C.B. Archers 6 Vs 2 Orient Bar  -

Wednesday 26th August 2009

Archers at the double over the Orient Bar

It’s the third week of the new season and the Archers are at home. The

visitors are the Orient Bar, seeking revenge for last week’s cup defeat.

                 The Edmund Rice lounge is a favoured venue for darts matches;

its cosy layout promotes a good atmosphere. The Archers have a

strong home record here, which they were determined to maintain.

First to the oche for the Archers was Gaz O’Reilly against Conor Wylie.

Conor quickly set a marker taking the first leg in 24 darts. This seemed

to spur Gaz on and he threw some big numbers in taking the second leg.

Both players peppered the treble 20 in the decider but faltered at the

finish line. In the end Gaz found a double 10 to put the Archers one game

                  up.

Kevin O’Reilly Snr was next against the Orient’s Paul Scott. Paul gave

a good account of himself in the recent cup match but league

games are about consistency. Kevin favours the 19 route and took the

first leg with out much effort. The second leg was a bit of an upset

with Paul winning it, so Kevin had to start over in the decider.

‘Steady as she goes’ could be Kevin’s catchphrase and so it was that

he closed out the game 2 legs to 1.

Sean Morrow didn’t play for the Orient in the cup, so he was a bit

of an unknown quantity against Brian McKinney. Sean made a good

start with some high scoring. Brian was just about keeping in touch when

he summoned up three dream darts to hit a 158 checkout and take the

leg in 24 darts. He opened the next leg with a ton but the personal-best

outshot he’d just hit was too much of a distraction and Sean took the

next two legs to register the Orient’s first point of the night.

Archers’ new boy John Black got drawn against ‘uncle’ Geordie

Bolton in the fourth game of the night. This game was a cracker. First

blood went to Geordie with a 26 dart leg checking on 92. This only

served to anger John and he was superb in taking the next leg in 24

darts to level the game. The third leg was something punters pay to

watch and dart players dream of being involved in. Ton after ton and

neither player looked like cracking. All too soon it was over with

Geordie hitting 62 for an 18 dart leg; had he not won with that

throw, John definitely would have won with his next throw.

The match was all square when Kevin Mezza flighted his darts,

hoping to restore the Archers advantage against Darren Bolton. It was a

stroll for Kevin in the end, winning 2 legs to 0. Kevin hit a few tons

but the highlight was his attempt at a 158 finish. Unlike Brian earlier

Kevin’s double shot hit the wire, so he had to be content with just the win.

A repeat match-up from last week was Billy Davidson against Gerard

McClonaghan of the Orient. In their cup match Gerard had taken a

surprise win. Billy looked comfortable in winning the first leg with

some nice scores and the second leg looked like going Billy’s way too.

But as the double approached Billy started to get twitchy. Gerard was

closing in on a finish while Billy chased his double and it appeared Billy

would suffer the same fate as his previous matches: Not this time! Billy

broke his duck with a double one and a 2-0 scoreline. The Archers had at

                  least a draw.

Marty Currie won the match for the Archers with a fine display of

precision darts against an under-par Joe Millar Jnr. Despite dropping

the second leg, Marty won in 21 and 24 darts.

This left Kevin O’Reilly Jnr with an exhibition match against Tony

Parker. Tony had shown his ability in the cup when beating John

Black. On the night Tony wasn’t the player he was the previous week

and Kevin took the game 2-0 in 25 and 24 darts.

Archers keep their 100% win record with this 6-2 victory. Next week

Sliabh Dubh are the first obstacle to overcome in the pursuit of the

                  Vol Pearse Jordon Cup.

Man of the Match would have gone to Brian McKinney had he won.

But for me, Billy D overcame immense pressure and exorcised some

Demons with this 2-0 win over his conqueror from the previous week.

 League 3

-  Slaibh Dubh 2 Vs 6 C.B. Archers  -

Wednesday 9th September 2009

Sweet revenge for unbeaten Archers

Even though the Archers haven’t been in existance for very long, a

fierce rivalry has developed between them and the Sliabh Dubh. Both

teams have players who are possessed of a strong desire to win and

now Sliabh Dubh have a team capable of knocking them off the top

                  spot.

Following on from last week’s cup semi-final win the Sliabh Dubh

were hoping to put a dent in the Archers’ league aspirations. From

the Archers’ point of view, it was payback time.

Leading off for the Archers was Kevin O’Reilly Snr against John

Matthews. John is a very fast thrower and he thudded his darts in to

the 20s as if he needed to rush off somewhere. Kevin, as always,

concentrated his darts on the 19s and didn’t allow his rhythm to be

upset by John’s rapidity. This cool, calm approach paid dividends in

a 2 legs to 0 victory for Kevin.

Peter Matthews was one of Sliabh Dubh’s winners in last week’s cup

match and he was hoping to pick up where he left off against Marty

Currie. Marty’s 100% record looked in doubt when Peter opened the first

leg with a ton forty, but it was only for a nanosecond. Marty took the

game 2-0 in 25 and 20 darts including a 68 checkout with some top

                  quality throwing.

Next was Brian McKinney looking to record his first win for the

Archers against Joe McCoubrey Snr. This was a ding-dong battle and

Brian checked out on 100 to take the first leg. It was déjà vu for Brian,

though, in the second leg when he couldn’t find that clinical finish and

Joe levelled the game. Joe took a march in the third leg but Brian

fought back and, as usual, had a dart to clinch it. Nevertheless, it was

Joe’s game in the end for a 2-1 win.

The half way game was a good match-up between the Archers’ Kevin O’

Reilly Jnr and Jim Kerr of the Sliabh Dubh. Jim is a canny player and

he rarely gives an opponent an opening. Kevin’s style is not to wait to

be given a chance and he took the game to Jim, hammering the treble

twenties and winning 2 nil in 24 and 27 darts that included a fine 62 finish..

The task for Gaz O’Reilly now against ‘Soupy’ Campbell was to

secure at least a point for the Archers. Soupy throws with  pinpoint

precision and he is quite lethal when on his darts; Gaz is capable of

holding his own against anyone in the league when he is on his darts.

As it was neither player reached full throttle and Gaz nicked the first

leg with an awkward double 7 and took the second leg with double

                  top; job done.

Making his first league outing for the Archers was Chris McMaster

against Davy Parker. On paper this should have been an easy win for

Davy, but Chrissy is practically unrecognisable as a player this season and

despite losing the first leg in 26 darts he found another gear and took

the second leg to force a decider. This game hung in the balance

right down to the double, which Davy took to keep the Sliabh Dubh

in                in the hunt for a point.

Billy Davidson has had a topsy-turvey season for the Archers so far

but he seemed to be getting back to form when he faced Joe

McCoubrey Jnr. Despite Joe’s strong showing in the first leg, Billy

had the luxury of 6 darts at his double when taking the first leg. In the

second leg Billy was even more emphatic, hitting a ton forty on his

way to securing full points for the Archers.

The final match-up was little more than an exhibition game between

Kevin Mezza of the Archers and John Moore of the Sliabh Dubh.

Kevin had done for John in the first match of the Pearse Jordan cup

semi-final last week and he wanted to show that that result wasn’t a

fluke. John was never in the game and Kevin eased to a 2 – 0 win.

Final score 6-2 to the Archers who are now sole occupants of the

top spot in the league table.

Man of the Match goes to Gaz O’Reilly; he ducked and dived and he

never gave up when not at his best. Special mention also goes to

Chrissy McMaster. If he continues in this form he’ll be a future man

                 of the match

League 4

 -  C.B. Archers 8 Vs 0 Sloans  -

Wednesday 23rd September 2009

Archers close to perfection over the Sloans

The Archers’ second home match of the season saw the Sloans, sister team to Sliabh Dubh, visiting and hoping to do what no team has done so far; leave with a win.

The match started steady enough as Kevin Mezza took on the Sloans’ Thomas Slavin. Kevin hit some nice scores and didn’t have too much trouble in taking the game 2 nil with a 24 dart second leg.

Charlie Curley of the Sloans was next against Kevin O’Reilly Jnr and although Kevin was far from full throttle, Charlie suffered the same fate as Thomas losing 2-0.

The Archers’ had a new boy in Michael O’Reilly. He was playing Ciaran Matthews, who looked like he was way past his bedtime. Michael hasn’t thrown a dart in many years and his time away from the board was obvious in the early exchanges. Ciaran took the first leg and was so close to taking the game 2-0. But Michael’s experience told and he clawed his way back to level the game and the boost in confidence this brought helped him to a 52 finish in the decider.

Mr 100% Marty Currie would clinch at least a draw for the Archers if he could beat Gerard Meighan in the 4th game. Gerard is an old campaigner but he couldn’t keep up with Marty’s superior firepower and he went down in 26 and 24 darts without reply.

The potential match decider pitted the Archers’ Kevin O’Reilly Snr against Patrick Slavin. Kevin wasn’t blazing a trail and was close to giving the score keeper writer’s cramp with some small totals but he didn’t get pushed too hard for his 2 legs to 0 victory.

Now that his team had the match sown up, Billy Davidson could relax and put on a display. His opponent was Lawrence Flannery who, if he should decide to become a singer, could take the name ‘Bling Crosby’. Lawrence was no match for Billy and another 2-0 scoreline went to the Archers.

The CB crowd were now hoping John Black could keep the clean sheet going when he stepped up to play Chris Docherty. John’s darts were every bit as tidy as the tan he got on his recent holiday and Chris was shown no mercy as John recorded another 2 leg shut out.

The pressure was on for Gary O’Reilly to avoid being the only Archers loser on the night. Gerard Matthews was in the way of what would be a truly momentous result and this maybe accounted for Gaz’s initial wayward darts. Unfortunately for the Sloans Gerard couldn’t take advantage and he lost, as six others had, 2-0.

An 8-0 triumph for the Archers with only one leg dropped.

Man of the Match goes to Marty Currie, still unbeaten and not even on top form yet.

The TLTA cup is next  week but the Archers have no involvement due to losing in the quarters. Instead they will be contesting the Archers Individual Cup, club competition.

League 5

 -  Caulfields 6 Vs 2 C.B. Archers  -

Wednesday 7th October 2009

Archers suffer title setback against Caulfields

The top of the table clash between the Archers and Caulfields was also a battle of the 100% records; somebody’s invincibility was going to go.

When Kevin O’Reilly Snr kicked off for the Archers, there was no indication of the drama that was to follow. Kevin’s favoured 19s were paying big dividends and he quickly took the first leg in 20 darts. Opponent Patrick McConville was barely able to draw a breathe before he was fighting to save the game. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to hold on and Kevin took an impressive 2-0 win.

Michael O’Reilly, in only his second game for the Archers, was up against Danny Boyle. The first leg was a game of ‘find the double’, which Danny did, eventually. The second leg was a closer affair. Michael was starting to find his range and was unlucky to be only pipped to the finish despite Danny hitting a couple of ton plus scores.

Next was a dual of the Captains, Micky Martin for Caulfields and Kevin Mezza for the Archers. This was good match up and both players wasted no time in notching up the big numbers. The final scoreline doesn’t reflect how close this one was with Mickey winning it 2-0.

It was up to John Black now to try to get the Archers back on level terms against Hugh McMullan. Yet again, either player could have taken this one. In the first leg, John was very unlucky to leave himself on double one while going for a 119 finish. This allowed Hugh to sneak it on double 12 and he followed on in the next leg with a 23 darter to take the game.

The pressure was on Billy Davidson to halt the Archers’ losing streak. The first leg ebbed and flowed with some great shots from both players before Seamy Roberts clinched it in 25 on double 8. The second was even tighter with the treble 20 bed taking a hammering until Seamy took out 53 for a 21 dart leg.

A draw was the best the Archers could do when Gary O’Reilly took on Gerard Boyle. Gerard’s scoring in the first leg was a good example of why he is the reigning Individual Champion. But Gerard hadn’t reckoned on Gaz’s ‘never-say-die’ attitude and Gaz summoned up all the pain from the last four games and took the next legs to give the Archers some hope.  That was all tho as Gerard pipped the last leg.

The stage was set for Marty Currie to claw another game back for the Archers and he quickly got into his stride against Patrick O’Neill, landing a 48 finish to take a one leg lead. The next leg was a corker. Patrick stunned the crowd with a 141 checkout in an 18 dart leg. The decider was a nailbiter with Patrick hoping to win the match and Marty hoping to keep Archers in it. This time Marty’s magic failed him and Patrick took leg and match for Caulfields.

Although the match was over Kevin O’Reilly Jnr threw great darts to restore some Archers pride and put a fairer reflection on the result. Stevie Dee suffered the backlash and Kevin romped home in 24 and 22 darts.

So the Archers have lost their 100% league record. However, this early in the season it shouldn’t be that big a set back.

Man of the Match (for the Archers) goes to Kevin O’Reilly Snr. So consistant and lead from the front.

Archers go top after defeating TLTA

The Archers travelled over to the ‘Green Hut’ on Wednesday night hoping for some payback after the previous week’s narrow cup loss to the TLTA.

Kevin O’Reilly Jnr threw first against Paul McMenamin and he was determined to give the Archers the upper hand. Paul, however, wasn’t about to make anything easy and he rocked Kevin with some early big scores. But Kevin regained his composure and took the first leg with a few clutch throws. The second leg opened like the first with a ton from Paul but Kevin had found his range and he landed three tons of his own and took out 58 on his way to a 23 dart leg.

The Archers’ lead looked like increasing when Gary O’Reilly opened his account with a ton and 125 but opponent Gerard Holmes was in fine form and he powered his way to a 24 dart finish including two ton plus scores. Gaz ground out a win in the second leg and looked like having the edge in the third. Unfortunately, Gerard showed he has some grit too and he won the battle of the double 8s.

The third game started badly for Marty Currie as his inconsistant form allowed TLTA’s new boy, Joe Flannery, in to nick the first leg. Marty the showed he has some fighting spirit when he dug deep to level the game 1 leg a piece despite facing a ton onslaught from Joe. Any hopes that the third leg would be another close affair were quickly quashed as Marty did what he does best and coasted to a 23 dart win.

Kevin Mallon never got the chance to get the TLTA back on level terms when he faced Billy Davidson. The first leg was steady if unspectacular but the second was the leg of the night. Billy was in inspired form and he hit double top at the second time of asking to win in 20 darts.

This next game would secure at least a point for the Archers if Michael O’Reilly could get the better of Liam McMenamin. On another night, Michael might have won easy but Liam kept pegging him back and the first leg could have gone either way. Michael took it but Liam took the next in similar fashion. In the third, Michael was the more consistant and his double 2 was enough to get the Archers into an unbeatable position.

TLTA number one, Mark DiLucia, had Brian McKinney to deal with if he wanted to stop the rot. Brian hasn’t featured in the league for a while and he really had no answer to Mark’s superior firepower. A double 4 won the first leg for Mark in 22 darts and a 60 finish rounded off a 20 dart leg for the game.

Two games to go and the Archers’ Kevin O’Reilly hoped he could render the last game meaningless by winning the match against Vinty McCann. These are the occasions a calm head is needed and there are few calmer in this situation than Kevin. No fireworks and no disasters, Kevin’s throwing was steady and in the end, Vinty had no answer. A double 16 and 57 checkout won the game and ultimately the match.

The final match up was still a tasty one; Archers’ captain Kevin Mezza and Gary DiLucia. There was some great scoring in the two legs played but hitting the double is key and Gary hit double 10 twice to win in 27 and 23 darts.

Man of the Match goes to Marty Currie, a fantastic performance to go from rock bottom to top of the pile.

Archers held by Orient Star

The second league meeting between the Archers and the Orient Star took part in the CB clubrooms on Wednesday. The Archers got this season off to a winning start the first time these two teams met and since then their respective league form has contrasted sharply, the Archers heading the table and the Orient resting mid-table.

Kevin O’Reilly Snr got the match off against Anto Moore. Kevin’s usual form is nice and steady round the 19 bed. But tonight he gave the 19s such a hammering. The first leg was over in 21 darts including a big 129 from Kevin. The next leg was slightly longer lasting 23 darts with Kevin nailing three scores of 95+. Anto didn’t stand a chance.

A nice way to open the match and Gary O’Reilly against Cricky Magee filled the crowd with eager anticipation. Gaz didn’t disappoint in the opening leg, never scoring less than 60 on his way to a 48 finish in 24 darts. Cricky hit a couple of tons in the next but Gaz wasn’t out of it until Cricky hit double three. In the decider Gaz hit a couple of tons himself but the finishing was starting to go off and Cricky was able to sneak the double to level the match.

So square one again for Kevin O’Reilly Jnr and Liam Millar Jnr. When Kevin answered Liam’s ton with a ton forty it looked odds on he’d take the first leg. But it wasn’t to be and the Liam took a slender lead. Next leg and all the skill these two players possess seemed to disappear as errant throws landed darts all over the board and neither could take advantage. Fittingly it was a double one that clinched the leg, and it was Liam who put the Orient in front.

Two seasoned campaigners stepped up next, John Black of the Archers and the Orient’s Davy McCusker Snr. This was a good game for the neutrals to watch but not so for the Archers team as John’s big scoring wasn’t enough to win the first leg. John kept hitting the high numbers in the second and he forced a decider checking out on 32 for a 21 dart leg. Unfortunately the tons dried up and John succumbed to Davy’s more accurate throwing in the decider.

Captain Kevin Mezza found his team 3-1 down when he took on Davy McCusker Jnr. This could have been a tricky situation but Kevin loves these pressure games. A cautious approach was the order of the day in the first leg but when Mez got his nose in front he wasn’t going to give this game up. The 2-0 scoreline was just about right and ‘Special K’ had turned the Archers fortunes around.

Still trailing by one game, Michael O’Reilly Snr was hoping he would be good enough to get the Archers back on level terms when he threw off against Sean Moore. It looked good when Michael’s better scoring won the opening leg, but Sean fought back to take the second with a 75 checkout. So nerves were jangling in the third leg and both players were on form, Sean hitting the maximum 180 and Michael missing double 8 for a 127 finish. He didn’t miss it next throw and the Archers had restored parity.

New boy Michael O’Reilly Jnr had a massive debut against Joe Millar Snr. A daunting prospect for any player but despite losing the first leg, Michael belied his young age and threw some canny darts, including a ton, to push the game to a decider. Even though Michael was throwing some good darts the greater experience Joe had was enough to see him out for the win.

The last game was the sort of game Billy Davidson thrives on, playing the very useful opponent, Paul Morgan, and trying to save a point for the Archers. Paul opened with a ton and ton twenty but Billy brushed it all aside and checked out on 30 to lead 1-0. This seemed to take the wind out of Paul’s sails and Billy marched on, knocking in a 60 finish and ensuring the draw.

A subdued performance from the Archers and they’ll feel it is points dropped rather than a point gained. Next week is round 3 of the Archer’s Individual cup as they have a bye in the J Dempsey Shield.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin O’Reilly Snr. He blitzed those 19s and left Anto Moore shell-shocked.

Archers back on top

The Archers travelled over to the Orient Bar on Wednesday night for the first time since the start of the season to face the Orient, who they had beaten 6-2 in League round 2. A win tonight would see the Archers return to the top of the table with Caulfields having a bye this round.

Kevin O’Reilly Snr threw first for the Archers against Joe Miller Jnr and based on previous results, he was expected to give the Archers the upper hand. Joe, on the other hand, is something of a wiz-kid and he shook free from the clutches of Kevin’s steady play to take the first leg. Kevin has been on the back foot before and he never hits the panic button. Tonight, though, the panic button would not have mattered as Joe went into overdrive and romped home in 17 darts to inflict a rare defeat on the league’s most consistent player.

When everyone had stopped blinking with shock, Captain Kevin Mezza followed the Orient’s Conor Wylie to the oche. There was to be no repeat of the first game upset as Mez bossed his way to the first leg. Conor picked up the pace with a couple of tons in the next but Mez was not to be denied and he levelled the match.

So back to square one for John Black and Paul Hanna. Paul didn’t feature for the Orient the last time the sides met and he matched John dart for dart the whole game. This made for an exciting event with both players having their team mates on the edge of their seats with tons and missed doubles. ‘Blackie’ came good in the end and put the Archers into a slender lead.

There are a few events that people will see only once in a life time; Haley’s Comet or a Solar Eclipse for example. Tonight the assembled players were witness to two such rare events. The first was Kevin O’Reilly Snr being played off the board. The second was a league win for Brian McKinney. Unfortunately, for Tony Parker this is marked in his loss column. Not a game for dart fans as both players were poor, but another win for the Archers.

Quite a turn around for the Archers, now only one win away from a guaranteed point. Getting that point was the responsibility of Gary O’Reilly as he faced D O’Hare. Gaz was steady enough in the first league and a double 10 was enough to take the first leg. In the next leg, Gaz was more like himself, throwing only 24 darts for the win.

A weather warning was needed for the next game as ‘Hurricane’ Davidson touched down. Billy ‘D’ has thrown some great darts this season but he reserved his best to welcome Jamesy Bolton back to the Divis Dart league. A 97 finish in the first leg was followed 24 darts later with a 62 check out to seal the match for the archers.

The last two games saw Kevin O’Reilly Jnr pitted against Paul Scott. Kevin made it 6-1 to the Archers with a workman like performance, taking the game 2-0. Michael O’Reilly Snr finished off with a loss against Geordie Bolton Snr but by then the result was beyond changing.

Man of the Match goes to Billy Davidson, a brutal demolition of a much fancied opponent.

Archers lose grip on top spot

Match of the day in league round ten was the game between current league champions Sliabh Dubh and pretenders to the throne, the CB Archers. This has become a ‘Big Two’ match despite the fact the Archers have only contested the league for two years.

Opening the match was Brian McKinney against Joe McCoubrey Snr. These guys had played out a cracking game earlier in the season that Joe won 2-1. Despite his poor league form Brian was giving it the full beans from the off to reverse that result. The first leg was tight but Brian took out an awkward double 3 to gain the advantage. In the second leg, Brian got a good lead with a couple of tons and even though Joe started to land big darts, Brian hit a double 5 for the win.

Captain Kevin Mezza built on that win with a superb 87 finish in the first leg against Kevin Campbell. From there though Mez proceeded to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. ‘Soupie’ hit a couple of tons on his way to taking the second leg but should have been well out of sight in the decider. In a leg that mirrored the tale of the Tortoise and the Hare, Tortoise Campbell had the key to the mad house when both players found themselves on double 1.

The third match-up was between Gary O’Reilly and Peter Matthews. Gary is quite capable of beating anyone on his day, but Peter is no dozer and he waltzing into a handy lead. Gaz seemed to wake up then and banged in a couple of tons on his way to a double 13 and 1 leg lead. The next leg saw Gaz brushing off Peter’s big scores and a 48 finish was enough for a 2-0 win.

‘Voice of an Angel’ John Black was not, unfortunately, on song for the Archers when he faced John Moore. Although ‘Blackie’ didn’t lie down meekly, hitting a few ton plus scores, he wasn’t able to hit his doubles and John levelled the match 2 games apiece.

Michael O’Reilly Jnr has been making steady progress in his debut season. However, he has yet to find a game winning double and that task was made very hard when he played Joe McCoubrey Jnr. Michael, again, showed some great composure but it’s difficult to compete against someone who is hitting a 22-dart leg and Joe hit two of them to extend the Sliabh Dubh’s lead.

The Sliabh Dubh were now one game away from a precious point and Michael O’Reilly Snr would need to pull out all the stops to prevent that happening against Davy Parker. That’s exactly what Michael did in the first leg finishing on a fine 60. After that Davy started to turn the screw and he eventually levelled the game on a double 10 then threw a near perfect 20-dart leg finishing with a 68 for the win.

With the point secured John Matthews was hoping to go one further and seal the match for Sliabh Dubh. Kevin O’Reilly Snr had to rely on all his experience to keep the match alive for the Archers, nibbling his double down to 8s in the first leg. Normal service was resumed in the second leg and Kevin checked out on 55 in 24 darts. A stay of execution for the Archers and Billy Davidson would need one of his man of the match performances against Jim Kerr to snatch a point for his team. The game went the distance and all three legs involved high quality darts. Billy hit the big maximum 180 when taking the first. Despite hitting a ton forty in the next, Billy was unable to stop Jim winning it in 24 darts. The deciding leg saw no let up in high scoring and Sliabh Dubh clinched all three points when Jim finished on 50 for a 2 legs to 1 victory.

Man of the Match goes to Gary O’Reilly. A slow start but a strong finish.

Archers extend their lead at the top

The Archers travelled over to the Sliabh Dubh club on Wednesday to face the winless Sloans. With Sliabh Dubh playing Caulfields, this was an opportunity to stretch their lead at the top against a team who the Archers only dropped one leg when they last met in the league.

The match got under way when John Black took on Patrick Slavin. The first leg was all about missed doubles and Patrick took it on double 12. In the next leg Blackie seemed about to throw away a certain win when he just nicked the leg from a fast catching Patrick. The decider was almost as close but a double 10 was enough for Blackie to get the Archers off to a winning start.

Billy Davidson was next up against Gerard Matthews and he was in imperious form. The first leg was over in 20 darts when Billy hit double top and a 24 dart second leg was completed with a superb 50 finish.

The Sloans have a promising young player in Ciaran Matthews and he gave Kevin O’Reilly Jnr a bit of trouble in the third game of the night. Kevin notched two ton plus scores on his way to winning the first leg but Ciaran hit a couple of big scores in the next including a ton forty. Kevin needed all his wits to win the leg and put the Archers into a commanding lead.

Brian McKinney has had a somewhat disastrous league campaign so far, but was coming off the back of two straight wins. Unfortunately, Brian was no match on the night for opponent Joe Dempsey who won 2 legs to nil needing only 23 darts in each.

Archers’ Captain Kevin Mezza found himself behind early on when he lost a scrappy opening leg against Kieran Robinson. After that, Mez calmed himself and finishes of double 20 and double 12, and a ton count of 4 in the game, secured at least a point for his team.

The next Archers’ win would claim all three points and Gary O’Reilly looked like doing just that when he won the first leg against Thomas Slavin. The next leg was very close and missed doubles from Gaz allowed Thomas to level the game. Ignoring that set back Gaz went into overdrive with a neat 19-dart leg, finishing on 40. The Archers had the match.

There was no pressure on Archers’ youngster Michael O’Reilly now and he was going all out when he faced Brian Magee. The first leg was not so good for Michael as Brian took it on double 4. The next saw Michael step up a gear and he took it on double 8. The decider was nip and tuck until Brian checked out magnificently on 76 for the win.

The last game of the night was another dead rubber but both Kevin O’Reilly Snr and Joe Slavin were still throwing determinedly. The first leg went to Joe with double one. Kevin put up more of a fight in the next but Joe was quickest to the double and the game was his.

Man of the Match goes to Billy Davidson, a serious contender for player of the year.

Archers held but maintain lead at the top

The second league meeting between the Archers and Caulfields was held in the CB club on Wednesday night. The Archers hold a healthy 4-point lead over the Caulfields but with their bye week coming up the Archers were hoping for a win that would prevent them losing any ground.

This was definitely a game of two halves and the Archers got off to the perfect start when Kevin Mezza won the battle of the captains against Mickey Martin. Mickey was first to the double in the opening leg but bust allowing Mez to take out double 18. In the next leg, Mickey was again first to the double, even though Mez had opened with consecutive ton fortys, but couldn’t convert his advantage and Mez landed a double 5 for the win.

Caulfields then reeled off the next three games starting with Micky Grady’s win over Michael O’Reilly Jnr. Michael was throwing good darts and even had the first shot at winning the first leg but Micky hit double 14 at the second time of asking and muscled a 24 dart leg to win 2 legs to nil.

Michael O’Reilly Snr was the next to fall, this time at the hands of Hugh McMullan. This was a long drawn out battle and both players had their chances to win. Eventually Hugh found the doubles needed to give Caulfields the lead.

For their third win on the trot, Caulfields’ Danny Boyle beat Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. Kevin won the first leg in a game of chase the double. Nevertheless, for the next two legs Danny had the better ton plus count, 5 to 2, and finished the game handsomely in 19 and 23 darts.

The Archers could not afford any more slip-ups if they were to get anything from the match and Gary O’Reilly was their next man up to halt the decline. Opponent Gerard Boyle is the current individual champion and both players got straight down to business. After 22 darts, Gaz had the job done and in the next leg a fine 37 checkout was enough to give the Archers their first win since the opening game.

All the pressure now transferred onto the shoulders of Billy Davidson in his game against Seamy Roberts. Billy is well equipped to handle this kind of pressure but got off to a bad start, losing the first leg in 24 darts. The next leg was a whirlwind, over in 16 darts and the game went into a decider. The tension in the room was palpable as both players missed the doubles for an important win. Eventually Billy hit a nervy double five and the match was still in the balance.

Up stepped Brian McKinney and Stevie Dee Jnr. A win here for Brian and the Archers would have at least a point. However, Brian didn’t do himself any favours by losing the first leg. From there though, Brian got his act together, levelled the game in 24 darts, and secured the win with the night’s highest check out of 85 in 21 darts.

So three games in a row for the Archers and one more would turn the draw into a valuable win. Unfortunately, on the night Kevin O’Reilly Snr was no match for Paddy O’Neill. Kevin was not playing all that badly but he could not keep up with Paddy’s superior firepower and two top quality finishes of 82 and 76 sealed a point for Caulfields in 24 and 18 darts. A fair result from a great match.

Man of the Match goes to Billy Davidson for his performance in a real pressure cooker game.

Apathetic Archers hammered at home

With space at the top of the league at a premium, the Archers were hoping to consolidate their lead with a win over a TLTA side who have been causing a few upsets of late.

Michael O’Reilly Snr threw first against Gerard Holmes, determined to give the Archers a good start. Unfortunately for Michael, Gerard was in the zone and he took the first leg in 22 darts and the game was won with a double 1 in the second leg.

The Archers fell further behind when Gary O’Reilly suffered the same score line against Paul McMenamin. Paul notched a double 16 in the opening leg and followed that with a neat 60 finish in the next leg.

Some steadying of the ship was done by Billy Davidson when he faced Liam McMenamin. Billy had the first leg won in 23 darts on a double top checkout. However, Liam put up more of a fight in the second leg and Billy just nicked it on double 2 after both players had missed chances to win.

Kevin O’Reilly Snr threw great darts in his first leg against Mark DiLucia. Nevertheless, he had no answer when it came to the double with Mark narrowly missing the bull for a 167 finish, but not a double 8. The next leg was even more conclusive and another double 8 ended the leg in 16 darts.

The TLTA secured at least a point when Joe Flannery beat Brian McKinney 2 legs to nil. Joe found the big dart when he needed to, and double 1 then double 10 were enough to win the game.

The worst possible result for the Archers’ title aspirations was served up in the next game between Michael O’Reilly Jnr and Kevin Mallon. Kevin took the fist leg after Michael had busted 4 times going for the double. Michael levelled in the next after more missed doubles. But the match win was secured when Kevin upped his game in the decider.

The two remaining games were mere formalities but ‘Sambo’ Ramsey and Gary Dilucia were still going all out for the win against respective opponents John Black and Kevin Mezza.

Blackie was pipped in his first leg but a good 59 finish in 23 darts forced a decider. This third leg was a game of missed chances until Sambo took out double 8.

Captain Kevin Mezza traded tons with Gary but didn’t hit that vital score, the double, which Gary managed twice to cap a miserable evening for the Archers.

Man of the Match goes to Billy Davidson. He stood up unlike his teammates.

Archers get title challenge back on track

Poor form of late has seen the Archers relinquish their grip on the top spot and indifferent cup performances haven’t afforded any respite from the decline either. So on Wednesday night in the CB club something had to give.

Billy Davidson was hoping to erase the horror memories of his 3-a-side campaign against Joe Millar Snr. Unfortunately it looked unlikely as both players ended up on madhouse and for a while, they hit everything but the double 1, which Billy did eventually. Joe showed what they are capable of hitting double top in a 22-dart second leg. Nevertheless, 1 became the loneliest number again in the decider with Billy repeating his checkout from the first leg to edge the Archers in front.

Next up were Michael O’Reilly Snr and Anto Moore. Anto has an unusual but effective style of throw, demonstrated well when he took out 56 to clinch the opening leg. However, Michael showed good fighting qualities to level the game. The battling continued in the third leg and Michael fought hard for a well-deserved win.

The match was taking on the kind of look of the early season games but the Orient felt they had a good chance to pull one back when Sean Moore took on Michael O’Reilly Jnr. Not so this time. Michael was majestic, hitting four ton plus scores and a 23-dart leg in a 2 legs to nil victory that gave Sean no chance.

The Archers were looking odds on for at least a point in the fourth game when Kevin O’Reilly Jnr sprinted to an early lead, finishing in 24 darts. Opponent Cricky Magee had other ideas though and he levelled with a 74 finish in 24 darts. Cricky completed a classy comeback in the third, finishing on 48 in 21 darts to get a win on the board for the Orient.

Captain Kevin Mezza’s game against Liam Millar was a carbon copy of the previous game. Mez strode into a lead but missed doubles allowed Liam to level the game. In the deciding leg, Liam had darts and when he got first throw at the double, he made no mistake and the Archers’ lead was cut to one game.

An old face making a welcome return to the darts fraternity was Marty Currie. Marty had taken a prolonged break from the team but it was hard to tell he hadn’t lifted a dart in several months as he eased to a 2 nil win over Paul Morgan and the Archers had a point.

If Gary O’Reilly got the better of Kevin O’Neill next, then the Archers would have a win that would keep them in the title race. Gary didn’t disappoint. The first leg saw Gary bust on a 78 finish but he didn’t miss on his next attempt. The second leg was slightly easier and a couple of ton plus scores allowed Gary the luxury of two darts for the finish which gave the Archers all three points.

The final game was for pride only and played as such. Brian McKinney managed to pip Jam Kelly to the double in the two legs played, for a rare league win. The 6-2 scoreline was a good reflection on the match overall.

Man of the Match goes to Michael O’Reilly Jnr. Performance of the season so far for the youngster.

Archers lose ground in Orient Bar stalemate

As the season moves towards its conclusion, points are becoming ever more precious. The Archers were 2 for 2 against the Orient Bar so far but the Orient were a much improved side coming off the back of a couple of strong displays in league and cup.

Starting off were Marty Currie and Geordie Bolton Snr, a good game that set the mark for the following match-ups. ‘Gentleman George’ is a joy to watch when he’s in full swing. Couple that with Marty nearly back to his best and you have the ingredients for a great game. Both players traded tons but Geordie had the better accuracy when it came to the doubles. Double top accounted for the first leg in 22 darts and a fantastic 95 finish sealed the win in the next.

Another exciting player for the Orient is Sean Moran and he didn’t disappoint against Kevin O’Reilly Snr. Kevin opened with a ton, which was matched by Sean, and the big scores continued coming. However, just as in the first game, it was the double dart that was the important one and Kevin’s were just outside the wire leaving Sean to wrap up a 2 legs to nil victory.

Two nil nearly became three nil when Billy Davidson faced off against Tommy Ryan. Billy was bang in form hitting big scores from the start and won the first leg in 23 darts with a cracking 86 finish. Nevertheless, Tommy drew level in next to no time and then opened the decider with a maximum ton eighty. Billy clung on as best he could and when Tommy bust throwing for the game, Billy was straight in with a 45 checkout for a narrow win.

Parity was restored when Captain Kevin Mezza beat Paul Hanna, but he had to come from behind for his win. Paul took a tight first leg with a double top but Big Mez knocked it up a gear in the next winning it with a neat 56 finish in 23 darts. The third leg was much the same and Mez nailed a double 16 at the first attempt.

The Archers then went ahead for the first time in the match after Gary O’Reilly got the better of Darren Bolton. Yet again, it was a come-from-behind win that saw Gaz reply to Darren’s stunning first leg 19 darter, with two steady 24-dart legs, finishing on double 9 and double top.

The Orient’s decline was halted by Jamesy Bolton when he won a game of the highest quality against Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. Jamesy took the first leg in 18 darts which included three ton plus scores. Kevin’s double 8 in the next leg capped a good 22 darter. However, Jamesy mirrored that in the decider landing his own double in 8 in 22 darts.

It was still all to play for when Fiontan Carson stepped up against Conor Wylie. Fionn got off to the perfect start with a double top but just got pipped in the second leg. The all-important decider went long as both players began to realise the significance of the win and a point was finally secured for the Archers when Fionn hit double 18.

Twice this season Brian McKinney has faced Joe Miller Jnr and twice he’s been on the wrong end of the result. But this time it looked like third time lucky as Brian opened with a ton forty quickly followed by a ton. But when it mattered, Brian couldn’t sustain the quality allowing Joe to take the leg with a fifty finish. The next leg followed in similar fashion, Brian opened with a ton but trailed off and Joe guaranteed a draw for the Orient winning 2 legs to nil.

Man of the Match is a tough one this week, but Gary O’Reilly shades it for the manner in which he bounced back in his game.

Archers' title dream becoming a nightmare

The final league match between current champions, Sliabh Dubh, and erstwhile title favourites the Archers, took place on Wednesday night. Anyone having their first experience of Divis League darts may have been surprised at the quality on show. But Sliabh Dubh aren’t topping the league table with 6 cups already in the trophy cabinet for nothing. Despite the scoreline, for the most part the real different was the width of the wire.

The Archers got off to a great start with Kevin O’Reilly Snr beating Peter Matthews. Kevin took the first leg on the dreaded double 1 but let the second leg slip which Peter took in 25 darts. The deciding leg included a maxmum 180 from Peter but he bust on his double and Kevin stepped in to take out 25 for the win.

It was a false dawn for the Archers as they lost the next six games starting with Billy Davidson against Joe McCoubrey Jnr. Billy just couldn’t get going and Joe wasn’t hanging about to let him back in. Joe took the first leg, which included another ton eighty, on double 1 and the second on double 8.

John Black was the next to fall. He may have felt in was in contention in the opening leg but opponent John Matthews pulled off a stunning 108 checkout to win in 24 darts. ‘Blackie’ wasn’t deterred and he opened the next leg with a couple of ton plus scores. Unfortunately, ‘Harpo’ wasn’t to be denied and he took the game on double 12 in 25 darts.

The hatrick for the Sliabh Dubh was achieved when Joe McCoubrey Snr got the better of Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. Kevin was out of sight early on in the first leg but couldn’t find a double allowing Joe to claw back and nick the leg. The next leg saw Joe hit scores of 121, 135 and 165. But back came Kevin and the game went into a third leg. The players traded tons but Joe got the double first and made no mistake, winning in 21 darts. The ton count in this game was 5-4 to Joe.

The draw was guaranteed next after Gary O’Reilly lost to Davy Parker. As with Billy earlier, Gaz couldn’t establish any consistency. Davy on the other hand won the first leg with a super 74 finish and wrapped up the game with a 25 finish in the next leg.

The Sliabh Dubh took all three points in the next game when John Moore was too good for Brian McKinney. John had recently reached the finals of the Pairs competition and he carried some of the form into tonight’s game. But he didn’t meet much resistance in his 2 nil victory.

Captain Kevin Mezza was unable to stop the rot as the heart went of the Archer’s fight and he succumbed to ‘Soupie’ Campbell’s big darts, also losing 2 legs to nil.

The final game was little more than an opportunity for Marty Currie to get some much needed match practice against Jim Kerr, who gives it his all regardless of the importance of the game. Marty showed well and hit the ton counter for four on his way to a win that will do little to ease the pain of this league defeat.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. I’m going against convention because Kevin lost. But there are few who would have beaten Kevin in this form. Unfortunately Joe McCoubrey Snr just happens to be one of them.

Next week is the first round of the Marie Bolton cup in the Orient Bar and the Archers face off against Caulfields

Archers stunned in Sloans Stalemate

Bottom of the table Sloans, with only one point before tonight’s game, almost caused this season’s biggest upset when The Archers travelled over to the Sliabh Dubh club for round 18 of the Divis Dart League.

Gary O’Reilly’s game against Patrick Slavin was the shape of things to come when he couldn’t find his normal rhythm and accuracy. Patrick was throwing excellent darts and he took the first leg on double 8 and two nice tons led to double top for the win in the second.

It looked like the Archers would get back on even terms when Billy Davidson took the first leg over Stephen Caughey in 24 darts. Nevertheless, Stephen came out slugging in the second leg and hit a ton and ton forty on his way to levelling the game and he kept the ton count going in the next leg, taking out double 20 to extend Sloans’ lead.

It went from bad to worse for the Archers next when John Black failed to hit his doubles allowing opponent Paddy Bell to win both legs with good finishing. Single 20 then tops won the first leg and a 42 finish sealed John’s fate in the following leg.

The Sloans had gained a very rare point with Charlie Curley’s win over Archers’ captain Kevin Mezza. ‘Big Mez’ was keeping pace in the opener until Charlie hit a 129 to leave double top. A couple of busts by Mez in the second leg, and a great 55 finish from Charlie clinched at least a draw.

The pressure was on Brian McKinney now to try and stage a come back for the Archers. Brian Magee, on the other hand, was two doubles away from giving the Sloans their first win of the season. The Archers’ Brian didn’t waver. His opponent started with big scores but Brian held his nerve taking out 43 in the first leg. In the second, he chipped his way to double 18, hitting it first dart and the Archers had a reprieve.

Building on this win Kevin O’Reilly Jnr was in stunning form, winning the first leg in 22 darts finishing on the night’s favourite double 20. The Sloans Kieran Robinson was trying his best to force a third leg but Kevin steam rolled his way to double 10 and the Archers were still in the match.

The baby of the team, Fiontan Carson, doesn’t have much experience of this kind of pressure. However, it would have been very hard for anyone to guess that when young Fionn got the better of Gerard Matthews. Showing no nerves, Fionn hit several big scores to leave 26, which he put away with ease. In the next leg, he was even more convincing and double 8 was no bother for Fionn to help his team a final game decider.

All or nothing now for the Archers. The much-needed win was a faded memory but an embarrassing defeat was a very real possibility.

Marty Currie had to call on all his skill and ability against Jim Dempsey. This game couldn’t have been closer with both players cancelling each other out at every throw. But when Marty nosed in front, he got a shot at double 16 which he didn’t waste any time hitting. Jim started well in the next but Marty now had a taste for victory and even a double 1 wasn’t going to get in the way. The Archers had won a draw.

Man of the Match goes to ‘Baby-Faced’ Fionn Carson. A mature performance from the young pup.

Next Wednesday is finals night of the Marie Bolton cup. The Archers aren’t in it so Round 6 of the Round Robin will take place in the CB club.

Archers clinch third after TLTA draw

The curtain has come down on another season in the Divis Dart League. Sliabh Dubh has already retained the championship with Caulfields runners-up. The only fight left was for third spot between the Archers and TLTA.

It did not look good for the Archers when Gary O’Reilly lost the opening game to Gerard Holmes. Gaz never looked likely to get the better of Gerard’s three ton plus scores and Gerard won comfortably on double 8 and double 5.

John Black looked equally as jaded and he fell to Sambo Ramsey’s better finishing. Sambo took a long first leg on double 4 and matched that finish in the second leg to give the TLTA a commanding early lead.

The brakes were put on though by Kevin O’Reilly Snr when he defeated Marty McDaid in game three. Kevin was oozing calmness and he eased to a 2 legs to nil victory to get the Archers on the board.

Unfortunately, Captain Kevin Mezza couldn’t sustain the fight back and he went down in three to Liam McMenamin. Liam took the first leg on double 5 but Big Mez was level shortly after with a neat 47 checkout. However, despite Liam ending up on the dreaded double 1 Mez couldn’t take advantage and the TLTA had a two game lead again.

The Archers got another one back when Billy Davidson saw off Paul McMenamin. Billy found little resistance on his way to a double 5 in 25 darts in the opening leg and hit the big 180 while securing the game 2 nil.

Young Fiontan Carson was most unlucky in his game against Joe Flannery. Fionn was a whisker away from double 12 that would have won him the first leg on a 116 finish. That near miss seemed to give Joe a sudden burst and he quickly finished the game in 25 and 23 darts.

The pressure was on now because the Archers could not afford another slip up if they were to hold on to third spot in the league table.

Brian McKinney was next and he got off to a flyer hitting a ton forty and 105, finishing on double tops to take an early lead. Twitchy darts from Brian allowed opponent Bobby McStravick to level on double 10 in the next leg. Nevertheless, Brian was not to be denied, hitting another ton and taking out the bogey double 1 to get the Archers within touching distance of the draw they needed.

It was all or nothing for Kevin O’Reilly Jnr when he faced Gerry Rooney, and Kevin stood up brilliantly. From the first dart, the result never looked in doubt and Kevin hit a ton in the first leg and a ton forty in the second as he brushed aside Gerry’s attempts to win the match for his TLTA side. The Archers were guaranteed third spot.

A disappointing end to the season for the Archers compared to their promising start. Next season is but a few weeks away and this and other poor matches will soon be forgotten.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. Looks like he’s enjoying his darts again and that bodes well for the Archers.

Charity Match

North Belfast 13.  7 Vs 6  West Belfast 13.

The C.B. Archers have entered the Divis Dart League after a years absents.  The first match the players had to play was the Charity Match in Aid of The Northern Ireland Hospice.  The Archers had eight players taking part on behalf of the North Belfast 13.  There was a great turn out in big room in the Turf Lodge Green Hut (home of the T.L.T.A dart team).

With both teams playing for pride and bragging rights for the season it looked like a very tight game on paper.  The C.B. Archers Brian McKinney got the ball rolling for the North with a good win over the much fancied Cricky Magee (Orient Star) who missed a hat full of darts at his double.  1-0 till the North.  Next up was Martin Currie (C.B. Archers) and he put another leg on the board for the North with some good darts.  Joe McCourbery Snr (Sliabh Dubh) show his loyalty by turning out for the North (Claiming he was born in the Mater Hospital) and disposed of his usual team mate Kevin (Soupy) Campbell (Sliabh Dubh) to put the North 3-0.

Gary O’Reilly (C.B. Archers) missed out on the chance to make it 4-0 to the North.  Team Captain Micky Martin (Caulfield’s) got the North 3 legs in front again with a great win.  John Moore (Sliabh Dubh) and Kevin O’Reilly Snr (C.B. Archers) weren’t at the races as the West pulled it back to with in 1 leg (North 4 West 3).   Kevin O’Reilly Jnr (C.B. Archers)  salvage some pride for the O’Reilly family with a great win over Joe McCourbery Jnr (Sliabh Dubh) to open up another 2 leg lead for the North.  Organiser and league Treasurer Henry Carson (T.L.T.A) a.k.a the wee man had the chance to put the North within one leg of the win lost out to Colm Clarke (Sloans).  North 5 West 4.  Kevin Mezza (C.B. Archers) got a hard fought win over Sean Moore (Orient Bar) to put the North within 1 leg of the win.

The last two players for the North were John Black and Billy Davidson (both C.B. Archers) who were eligible for the north under the international  granny rule claiming that there granny was born and lived in Jamaica Street.  John Black done his granny proud winning a great match over Seamy Roberts (Caulfield’s) and in turn wining the match for the North 7-5.  The last game was for pride only as Billy Davidson took on Peter Mathews (Sliabh Dubh) and clipped the wire of double Top before Mathews hit his double.  Final Score North Belfast 13. 7 West Belfast 13 6.  The Charity Cup and medals were presented by league  President Johnny Mc Mullan.

By the time you read this the Archers will have started there league Campaign against the Orient Star (Springfield Road) on Wednesday 12th August and my prediction is a 6-2 win for the Archers.  For any and all the up to date information on the C.B. Archers or the Ladbrokes.com Divis Dart League check out the Archers and or the league websites.

WEST BELFAST OPEN DARTS COMPETITION 2009

CURRIE TO HOT TO HANDLE IN QUALIFIER

Fourth Qualifying Round

A little spice was added to the competition this week as several new competitors tried there luck in the penultimate qualifier.  A new name to the competition shook up the combatants to prove that anyone is capable on their day of winning on finals day, August 8th.

Kevin Mezza (C.B. Archers) sent the Divis Dart League Individual Champion Gerard Bolye crashing out 2-0 in a preliminery match.  However Mezza failed to shine in his second game crashing out himself 3-0.  Brian McKinney (C.B. Archers) fail to win his opening game but both will be back next week hoping to qualify.

Board three threw up a new star in Martin (Hotstuff) Currie.  A nervy opener against old hand Arder McAllister was soon backed up by a better preformance against Seamus Roberts 3-1.  But it was in the semi were Currie began to show his protential with a great 16-dart leg in a captivating contest against Danny Bolye who hit 22 and 21 dart legs only for Currie to win the last led decider.

Then he was to face Martin Irwin who had a 130 outshoot and an 18-darter in his last game.  Irwin was considered favourite but couldn't get in front against the dogged determination of Currie and at the first attempt Currie made finals night with an excellent 4-2 result.

The prizes on the day were settled next and first to secure a spot in the final was surpise package Martin Currie.  Again a succession of ton scores set up 19 and 20 dart legs for him Currie to forge a 4-2 win against the tournament's second highest point scorer Martin Crossan.

The Final began in great stlye as big scores from both players saw them share the first four legs with two 19 dart legs from Currie and a 20 dart leg from McCabe the highlights.

In the past weeks McCabe has tended to drive on from here but this week he met his match as the younger Currie proved fearless as a big 180 in the next put him 3-2 up.  McCabe looked a little unsettled as the pressure told in the next two legs as Currie's exquisite finishing and another 19 - darter gave him his first deserved tournament victory.

He has also became the first non-central league player to qualify automatically.  Congratulations.

WEST BELFAST OPEN DARTS COMPETITION 2009

Finals Night

Kevin Mezza started the finals off in a pre qualifier against Jim Dempsey in a 1001 shout out.  Mezza hit 6 ton plus scores and hit the winning double to put him into the first round proper.  In the first round he came up against the man who knocked him out last week.  John Moore (5 times Divis Dart League individual champion)  Mezza had the darts and the changes to win the match but crashed out by the same score line of 3-1.  Martin Currie found it hard to reproduce his for of two weeks ago and also crashed out of the tournement in the first round.  The winner was Frank McCabe Jnr who defeated Paddy Mc in a high scoreing final which went right to the final leg.  5-4.

Vol. Pearse Jordon Cup

-  C.B. Archers 5 Vs 4 Orient Bar  -

Wednesday 19th August 2009

Sliabh Dubh

“Archers Fight Back Revives Memories of 2007”

Traditionally the first cup of the season, the Pearse Jordan holds

happy memories for the Archers being the first trophy they won in

                                                        their debut season.

It may be a world away from the glitz and glamour of a professional

darts tournament, but for most in the Sliabh Dubh club on

Wednesday night this is what darts is all about; the ‘Phil Taylors

practising their cup-winning checkouts, the friendly banter criss-

crossing the floor, the excitement building as the captains call out the

                                                               draws.

The Archers were up against the Orient Bar, sister team to the

Orient Star who the Archers had defeated the previous week.

Cup matches are best of nine legs so mistakes are quickly punished.

First up was Kevin O’Reilly Snr against Joe Miller Jnr. Kevin

has seen it all before and shook off two early tons from Joe to take

the leg in 19 darts; a totally unflappable performance.

Kevin O’Reilly Jnr was next against former league champion Geordie

Bolton Snr. This game ebbed and flowed with neither player able

to take a firm grip. In the end it was Geordie who dropped a dart

into double 18 to take the leg and level the match.

Chris McMaster was playing his first game of the season and is an

ever-improving player. Chris hit a couple of ton plus scores and

was on his double before his opponent, Connor Wiley, was

anywhere close to a finish. But everyone in darts knows it’s ‘scores

for show and doubles for dough’ and Chris just couldn’t find that

killer dart. Connor chipped away and when he got his chance he

took it to put the Orient ahead 2-1.

Smart money would have been on John Black against Tony Parker

next up. But smart money would have been wrong. Tony raced

away into the lead with a couple of 100s. But despite this John was

maybe one throw away from turning the leg around. However it

wasn’t to be, and Tony held on for the win.

It was up to Gaz O’Reilly to stop the rot against Darren Bolton

next; and Gaz duly obliged. Just like his ‘old man’ in the first leg,

Gaz ignored the tons that Darren was hitting and worked steadily

through the leg, pinging a double 3 for the win. A smooth operator

is Gaz, and a bit of a poster boy too.

Billy Davidson was throwing better darts tonight than last week. But

when it’s not your night, it’s not your night. Billy could not buy a

double against Gerard McClonaghan, who didn’t win a game the

whole of last season, and watched in disbelief as his early high

scores came to nothing when Gerard checked out. The Orient were

now one leg away from the semis.

The next three games were must-wins for the Archers. First of these

was Marty Currie against Bobby Parker. This wasn’t a vintage

display from Marty but he always had the upper hand and threw good

darts when he needed to in taking the leg.

Next was Brian McKinney. This week Brian showed what he is

capable of, beating Sean Moore in 24 darts with double-top in a 72

                  checkout.

The stage was now set for Kevin Mezza to claim the win as he

had done the previous week in the league. It was obvious he was

playing ‘Eye of the Tiger’ in his head as he ambled to the oche.

All those nights practising in the house paid off as ‘Special K’,

a tower of concentration, beat Paul Scott with a 56, two dart finish.

The Archers are still on course to regain the Pearse Jordan Cup

with this hard fought 5-4 win.

Next week the two teams do it all again in the league at the CB

                  club on the Antrim Road.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin Mezza for showing true

                  fighting spirit two weeks running.

Wednesday 2nd August 2009

Semi - Final

-  Sliabh Dubh 5 Vs 3 C.B. Archers  -

Pearse Jordan Cup Dream Over for Archers

It was the Pearse Jordan semi-final and finals night in the Sliabh Dubh

club on Wednesday night. The Archers didn’t enter last season so

they were still unbeaten in the tournament, and they aimed to keep it

                  that way.

Their opponents were Sliabh Dubh, current holders of the cup and

their biggest rivals. When the draw was made the Archers, already

bristling with confidence, were happiest with the match-ups and eager

                  to get started.

Kevin Mezza had the task of getting the Archers off to a winning start

against Sliabh Dubh’s John Moore; makes a change from having to

win it! It’s a different kind of pressure going first but Kevin was up for

it and didn’t raise a sweat checking out in 76 for a 21 dart leg.

Next was Gaz O’Reilly against Jim Kerr. Jim is one of Sliabh Dubh’s

toughest players but Gaz wasn’t giving him a look-in, hitting a ton

forty on his way to what looked like an easy win. An easy win but for

the double. Gaz’s team mates were holding their breath as he landed

dart after dart either side of the double bed with Jim closing in. Finally

a double 4 won it for Gaz and the Archers’ sigh of relief could be

                  heard in Poleglass.

Hoping to build on the Archers’ strong start was Marty Currie; Joe

McCoubrey Snr hoped differently. Marty is unbeaten this season but

he would need his top game to maintain that against Joe. After a slow

start Marty fired into life with a ton eighty and cruised to a finish,

landing double 10 for a 22 dart leg.

With his team 3-0 ahead Brian McKinney was in pole position against

Joe McCoubrey Jnr. All the pressure was on Joe; defeat here would

put the Archers one leg from the final. Brian was steady without

troubling the scorers and Joe hit a couple of tons. Eventually the leg

went Joe’s way for Sliabh Dubh’s first game of the night. Another

disappointing result for Brian. Yet again he got to the double first but

                  didn’t close the leg out.

It was still looking good for the Archers when John Black toed the

oche against Peter Matthews. A win for John would put the Archers

in the driving seat for the Final. But the Sliabh Dubh don’t have any

weak players and slip-ups are quickly jumped upon. This game was

a good example of that and Peter’s superior scoring won him the leg.

The Archers were on the ropes and looked to Kevin O’Reilly Jnr to

get them back to winning ways when he faced Davy Parker. Kevin

looked like the favourite at the start of the leg but Davy threw a

steady game and never let Kevin get a big lead. Approaching the

finish line Davy sneaked in front and at the first time of asking he took

his double to level the match.

Sliabh Dubh were on four-in-row with Toss Cush throwing against

Billy Davidson. Toss has been around the league for years and is a

former league champion, and he wasn’t going to make a mistake in

this situation. Billy threw admirably but it wasn’t enough to stop Toss

putting Sliabh Dubh on the brink of the final.

There are few dart players who would want to be in Chris

McMaster’s shoes at this moment. Chris had to win to keep the

match alive but he was up against John’ Harpo’ Matthews who is an

able scorer. John thundered ahead as Chris fought nerves to register

small scores. Half-way through the leg Chris rallied slightly but it

didn’t matter in the end as John won and put Sliabh Dubh into the

final for the third year running.

The most disappointing aspect of this match was that Kevin O’Reilly

Snr, last game, had a walk-over so the Archers only needed 1 more

leg at 3-0. Sliabh Dubh won the final 5-1 over the TLTA.

Man of the Match goes to Marty Currie, he just doesn’t miss.

T.L.T.A Cup (Formally J Wilson Cup)

Turf Lodge Green Hut

Archers bomb out of TLTA cup

The ‘Green Hut’ in Turf Lodge was the venue for the TLTA cup on Wednesday night. The Turf Lodge Tennants Association was formerly the St Johns team and the TLTA cup was formerly the J Wilson cup, and the Archers were hoping to go one better against the Orient Star than they did in their last cup outing.

The Archers had beaten the Orient Star in the first match of the season and Billy Davidson was hoping to carry on in the same vein against Cricky Magee. Billy had Cricky on the back foot with some heavy scores but he couldn’t land a double and Cricky pulled back to take the leg.

Marty Currie followed on against the Orient’s Paddy Dempster. Paddy is capable of hitting some big numbers but he wasn’t on his game and he allowed a below-par Marty, who missed double top for a 114 checkout, to ease to victory.

Just back from holiday was the Archers’ John Black and he had ‘cousin’ Geordie Bolton Jnr to contend with. There was no sign of jet lag as John steadily picked off his scores for the win.

Next up were Kevin O’Reilly Snr and Anto Moore. Kevin has this leg all ends up but found the double just as evasive as Billy had and Anto, from no-where, was delighted to get the Orient back on level terms.

Chris McMaster had a tough tie against Paddy Magee of the Orient. Both players gave a good account of themselves but Paddy edged it and the Archers found themselves behind again.

The Orient’s Davy McCusker is a big hitter and he hoped he would be able to power home against Kevin Mezza. Kevin notched a couple of 100s himself and this one went to the wire with Davy pipping Kevin to the double.

Kevin O’Reilly Jnr now needed to spark an Archers revival against Paul Morgan and things were looking good when Kevin hit a brace of tons on his way to stopping the rot.

Archers’ expectations were high when Gary O’Reilly stepped to the oche against Joe Millar Snr. Gary wasn’t blazing his usual trail but he was always in contention. Unfortunately double-trouble struck again and Joe rendered the deciding leg between Brian McKinney and Liam Millar null and void to win the match for the Orient by 5 legs to 3.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. He battled a few nerves but kept hopes alive; if only.

 Turf Lodge Green Hut

No problems for Archers’ A and B

Archers (B) 3 - 1 T.L.T.A (A)

The TLTA ‘Green Hut’ was packed out for the first round of the 5-a-sides. This is one of the cups the Archers won in their debut season and expectations were high for a repeat performance.

The first match was the ‘B’ Team against the hosts’ ‘A’ team and leading off for the Archers was Michael O’Reilly. Michael is settling in to the Archers’ set up well and he wasn’t going to allow opponent Coke McAteer to cause an upset and put the Archers on the back foot. Michael took out 32 for a comfortable win.

Following on was Brian McKinney against TLTA’s Gary DiLucia. The important thing for Brian in this short format was to build on Michael’s strong start and give the Archer’s a firm opportunity to take the match. This Brian did with some steady darts and the Archers needed just one more leg.

Mark Dilucia was going to need all his skill to save the white wash for the TLTA against Chris McMaster. Mark is one of the league’s big hitters and 22 darts and a double top later, he had given the TLTA some faint hope of avoiding defeat.

How much hope they had would depend on how well Vinty McCann played against Billy Davidson. Billy has been throwing well for the Archers this season and he replied to Vinty’s opening ton with one of his own. By the end of the leg, Billy had edged the ton count 3 to 2 and double 10 capped a fantastic 23 dart game.

A 3-1 victory to the Archers ‘B’ with John Black not needed against Binso Quinn.

Man of the Match for the ‘B’ team goes to Billy Davidson for some superb throwing.

                              Archers (A) 3 Vs 0 Orient D

The Archers ‘A’ team were up against the Orient ‘D’ team and this really was a David and Goliath match up without a slingshot in sight.

Gary ‘Faceman’ O’Reilly got the Archers off against Darren Bolton. The early exchanges were pretty even but ‘Gaz’ can always find another gear to get out of a tricky situation and he eased to the win on double 10.

Next up was Kevin ‘Hannibal’ Mezza in the pivotal leg. A win here for Kevin over Cricky Morrison would put the ‘A’ team within a whisker of going through to the quarters. The win wasn’t guaranteed when Cricky opened with some fine scoring but Kevin loves it when a plan comes together and he made a few adjustments and took the leg with a 60 checkout.

Hoping to close out the match was Kevin ‘BA’ O’Reilly Jnr. Kevin would have to overcome Bobby Parker to clinch a quarter final spot for the ‘A’ team and he pities the fool who doubts his ability to pull out all the stops when needed. Kevin put on a fine display of high scoring and took the Archers into the next round.

Watching from the wings were Kevin ‘Howling Mad’ O'Reilly Snr and Francie ‘General Stockwell’ Mezza who had been drawn to play Gerard McClenaghen and Conor Wylie respectively.

Kevin Mezza lifts the Man of the Match award for the ‘A’ team. He had the hardest opponent and produced a Captain’s display.

Archers get an A plus but a B minus

Wednesday night was a bumper night of darts as the 5-a-sides were played to a finish with the quarters, semis and final all to be completed on the night. Eight teams still had a chance of glory; 40 players hoping for that dream dart to win the cup.

The Archers’ ‘B’ Team took on the Sloans’ ‘C’ team and leading off for the Archers was, yet again, Michael O’Reilly. Michael looked comfortable from the start but couldn’t find the double, which let opponent Patrick Slavin in to nick the first leg.

John Black was up for the important second leg against Gerard Matthews but he, too, found the double a bit elusive and could only watch helpless as Gerard took out 56 to put the Sloans 1 leg from victory.

It was do-or-die now for Brian McKinney and the Archers. Steady darts were needed and Brian supplied these but the Sloans’ Brian Magee was not over awed with the responsibility of clinching the match, and he won the battle of the double 1s to put the Sloans through 3-0 on the night.

How Chris McMaster and Billy Davidson would have fared against Joe Slavin and Danny Parker was a matter of ifs and buts now.

Full support was turned to the ‘A’ team who had the Orient ‘C’ team to contend with. Marty Currie was back from his hiatus and faced Joe Millar Snr first up. Marty threw like he’d never been away and took the leg in 25 darts, which included a maximum 180.

Kevin Mezza was hoping to keep the Archers’ winning start going against Paul Morgan. ‘Mez’ threw brilliantly throughout the leg but somehow Paul got to the double first and he didn’t miss, leveling the match.

There was a bit of pressure for Kevin O’Reilly Jnr now to repair the damage against ‘Bapper’ Bolton. Normally Kevin would be favourite for this but it was touch and go until he landed a big 140 and from there Kevin wasn’t going to lose, taking it in 26 darts.

This put the Archers on the brink of victory and the job of closing out the match fell to Gary O’Reilly. ‘Gaz’ is well capable of handling the pressure and he calmly landed a double 8 to put the ‘A’ team in to the semis.

The semi final pitted the Archers against the TLTA C team. Kevin Mezza got the match started and he was determined to avenge his defeat from the quarters. And avenge he did giving ‘Sambo’ Ramsey little chance on his way to a 16 checkout.

Marty Currie looked on course to keep the winning streak going when he faced Joe Flannery but he somehow managed to let the leg slip despite hitting a big 140.

Making his Archers debut for this season was Francie Mezza against Paul McMenamin. Unfortunately, Francie wasn’t able to get into any kind of rhythm as Paul sped to victory in 23 darts.

It was all or nothing for Gary O’Reilly as he faced off against Gerard Holmes. This one was a tight affair but ‘Gaz’ held his nerve to push the match into a deciding leg.

So it came down to a sudden death shoot-out between Kevin O’Reilly Jnr and Liam McMenamin. Liam opened with 117 but from then on it was all Kevin and he nailed a double top for a 25 dart leg.

Pre-tournament favourites Caulfields A were between the Archers and their first piece of silverware this season. This Caulfields team is packed full of talent, containing the current pairs and individual champions plus two former individual champions.

Mickey Martin was first to toe the oche against Kevin Mezza. There wasn’t a fag paper between these two all game and it was a toss up who would get the nod. At the end, Mickey landed his double to put Caulfields ahead.

The reigning individual champion, Gerard Boyle, took on Marty Currie next. Gerard showed why he’s the champ with some fine scoring that included a couple of tons but Marty plugged away calmly and took the out shoot at the first time of asking.

Mirroring Gerard’s exploits in the previous leg was Gary O’Reilly. He, too, hit a couple of tons against Danny Boyle and he also found himself on the receiving end as Danny raced away to win in 24.

For the second match in a row the Archers needed a big game from the number four spot. This time it was Kevin O’Reilly Jnr, taking on Hugh McMullan. Hugh added a couple more hundreds to Caulfields ton count but Kevin was a player in inspired form and wasn’t about to be denied. His double ten drew huge sighs of relief from his team mates.

Francie Mezza hadn’t played any games before this night and now he was in the pressure cooker situation of throwing for the cup in the deciding leg against former individual champion Patrick O’Neill. Without any match practice, Francie faced an impossible task, which was highlighted when Patrick opened with a 140 and romped home in 20 darts.

So runner up spot will have to do for now.

Man of the Match awards for the ‘A’ team:

QF – Marty Currie for his big one and fine all round display.

SF – Gary O’Reilly. Resplendant in his lavender shirt, he kept hopes alive at number 4.

F   -  Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. Just like his brother, he gave his team a chance under immense pressure.

TLTA edge out the Archers

Wednesday night was cup night and the CB Archers were up against joint league leaders the TLTA in the Caulfields bar.  In the recent 5-a-side competition the Archers A team had taken care of the TLTA, so there was some meat on the bones of this match.

TLTA star man Mark DiLucia got the match started against John Black. The single leg format means you can’t be too slow out of the blocks and Mark upped his game to race ahead. 'Blackie' wasn’t so slow himself but he couldn’t catch up as Mark won the leg in 22 darts.

Mark’s brother Gary followed on against Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. Kevin’s early low scores left him too much to do as Gary sped into the lead and he maintained his accuracy taking out 72 to finish in 21 darts.

Captain Kevin Mezza was now in an unusual position with his team 2 legs down and like his team mates, he could only watch as opponent Liam McMenamin got the early upper hand and he wasn’t going to be caught to put the TLTA 3-0 in front.

The Archers now had a mountain to climb and Billy Davidson would need all his skill to turn the game around. This time it was the turn of the TLTA to watch as ‘Sambo’ Ramsey was swept aside and the Archers had their first leg of the night.

There was no time to relax as Marty Currie took on the very capable Vinty McCann hoping to put another leg in the win column for the Archers. Marty is never one to disappoint and he pulled out all the stops in his 25 dart leg.

However, the pressure was still on for Kevin O’Reilly Snr against Gerry Rooney. One slip and the TLTA would be nearly home. Gerry has had many fine wins in his time at the oche but Kevin is one of those players you love to have in situations like this. A cool thrower in a tight squeeze, Kevin got the Archers back on level terms.

Michael O’Reilly has shown glimpses of his old form in other matches but tonight he buried opponent Paul McMenamin under an avalanche of heavy scoring. It was level after the first throws but after that, it was one way traffic. Even a late 140 from Paul wasn’t enough to stop Michael, who landed double 18 to take the leg in 19 darts.

The Archers were now on the brink of a victory that looked highly unlikely after losing the first three legs and Gary O’Reilly could clinch it with a win over Gerard Holmes. This was a tense leg and the importance of the result was not lost on the players. Both had good scores but both hit low numbers and at the end Gerard just about fell over the finishing line to push the match to a deciding leg.

The whole result now depended on a one leg shoot out between the Archers’ Brian McKinney and Joe Flannery of the TLTA. Brian hasn’t been in the best of form this season and he was rocked by an early ton and ton forty from Joe. Nevertheless, Brian was throwing steady darts and he got himself to the double first. But it wasn’t to be as his attempt at double 1 dropped short to leave Joe to take out double 5 and another cup run was over for the Archers.

Next week the Archer’s can try for revenge as they visit the TLTA in league round 7.

Man of the Match goes to Michael O’Reilly for a superb leg of high scoring darts.

Archers Cup woes continue

The Archers had received a bye into the semi finals of the J Dempsey cup on Wednesday where they faced the Orient Bar who they had beaten easily the previous week in the league. But the Archers’ cup form has been less than impressive this season, so this match was far from a foregone conclusion.

Michael O’Reilly Snr was hoping to get the Archers off to the perfect start against Paul Scott. However, Paul was throwing some fine darts and he checked out on 75 to win the leg in 24 darts.

Next up for the Archers was Kevin O’Reilly Jnr and he faced Darren Bolton. This leg was topsy-turvy the whole way until Darren hit a 125 that seemed to inspire him and he landed double top to put the Orient Bar 2 legs to nil in front.

Billy Davidson was drawn against James Bolton for the second time in a week and not only was the result the same even though James hit a couple of tons and upped his game, the checkout was identical too. This time Billy needed just 21 darts to win. Billy is really starting to shine this season.

So the Archers pull one back and John Black had the opportunity to level the match against Tommy Ryan. Unfortunately, John didn’t take his opportunity and, after a slow start, Tommy found his range and took out a tricky 37 finish and the two leg lead was restored for the Orient.

Archers’ captain Kevin Mezza now had to try to reverse his team’s fortunes. Opponent Tony Parker was trying just as hard to force the Orient’s advantage. The leg was evenly balanced through the first few throws, then Mez clicked up a gear and after a ton and ton forty, he hit a neat 58 to close the gap once more.

Coming on the back of a rare league win Brian McKinney was tasked with getting the Archer’s back on even ground. The task was not made an easy one as Brian faced Joe Miller Jnr. Joe never hit the heights of his 17 darter from last week but Brian’s inability to string a few good throws together meant the Orient were 1 leg away from the final.

Many a team would like to have Geordie Bolton Snr throwing to win them a place in the final but many a team wouldn’t mind having Gary O’Reilly throwing to save the game either. From the off Gaz never gave Geordie a chance to show his normal ruthlessness and he won with a sixty finish in 24 darts.

Michael O’Reilly Jnr was making his second appearance of the season for the Archers and he immediately took the game to Sean Moran. Experience was the key here, but even though Sean reached his double first, Michael kept plugging away and was a mite unlucky not to nick the game. In the end a double 10 done for Michael and the Archers’ unenviable cup run continues.

The deciding leg would have been between Kevin O’Reilly Snr and Conor Wylie.

Man of the Match goes to Billy Davidson; 1 week, same opponent, same result, same check out. Superb.

 Crumlin News Cup

Sunday 20th December 2009

No end in sight for Archers’ cup drought

The newly created Crumlin News cup was played out to a finish on Sunday night (a one off for this season) and the Archers were hoping to break their cup hoodoo and be the first name on the new trophy. The Archers were drawn to play Caulfields, joint league leaders and hosts for the evening.

First darts for the Archers was Billy Davidson against League President Tommy Mullan. Billy’s darts have been quite hot of late and although they’d lost a few degrees of heat on the night, Tommy was shown no mercy as a double top put the Archers in to their customary lead.

Following on was Michael O’Reilly Snr against Stevie Dee. This game went one way then the other and both players had ample chances to win. Eventually Stevie found tops to draw the match level.

Caulfields’ Captain Micky Martin faced Kevin O’Reilly Jnr next. These two are near the top of the players’ league standings and showed exactly why with some fine scoring. Kevin had darts therefore he had first go at the double and he didn’t disappoint, taking out 40 to restore the Archers’ lead.

Brian McKinney was hoping to double his cup wins for the season when he played Seamy Roberts.  Seamy is a fine thrower but some wayward darts meant Brian was well in touch with a few steady throws. Just as in the previous legs this one came down to who could hit their double. Brian tried and missed. Seamy tried, missed but then strung three good darts together and the match was all square again.

Fifth game of the night and there was nothing to separate the teams. Kevin O’Reilly Snr was on fire against Gary Carmichael and it looked like the Archers were going back in front. Then Kevin started to let a few darts slip and the leg was finely balanced. That was until Kevin scored a magnificent 110 finish and the Archers had the lead once more.

There was still a way to go before this one would be over and next to the oche were Kevin Mezza and Danny Boyle. Danny has featured well for Caulfields and he was in top form hitting three scores of a ton or over and won the leg in 23 darts on double 5.

Last season’s individual champion, Gerard Boyle, found himself in the same situation as three of his teammates; trying to give Caulfields the lead. Michael O’Reilly Jnr has shown some promise in his first season and gave no deference to Gerard’s reputation, pushing him all the way. It wasn’t quite enough for Michael and Caulfields had the advantage for the first time.

When the draw was made Gary O’Reilly versus Paddy Boyle caught the eye. The fact that this was such a pivotal game now only added to the anticipation. Paddy got the better start then Gaz pulled it back and went in front. Then Paddy levelled and put his nose in front. It would have been easier to guess the lottery numbers than the winner of this game. In the end, Paddy landed a double 9 and the Caulfields marched on to the semis in their home competition.

The deciding game would have seen John Black against Hugh McMullan and I don’t even think Mystic Meg could have picked the result of that one.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin O’Reilly Snr. Over came a few blips with a great ton plus finish.

Archers keep cup hopes alive

The second running of the Edmund Rice cup was help in the CB’s main function room, a perfect setting for a big cup competition. The Archers had been drawn against the Orient Bar in the first round and were seeking revenge for their defeat in the J Dempsey cup at the hands of the same opponents.

Getting the action under way was John Black against Paul Scott. John threw some mean darts in the leg, including a ton. Nevertheless, Paul was on form with a couple of ton plus scores of his own and a 40 check out put the Orient into an early lead.

Michael O’Reilly Jnr has only tasted defeat in his debut season, although it’s not for the want of trying. He was up against Conor Wylie who is a very capable player. However, Michael showed why he might be around for a while with a stunning 21 dart maiden victory, finishing on 89.

The third match up was between Billy Davidson and Darren Bolton. Billy didn’t give Darren much of a chance in this one. Both players notched a ton but Billy’s overall average was superior and he landed a double 6 for a 20-dart leg.

The advantage had swung the Archers’ way as Kevin O’Reilly Jnr faced Tony Parker. Tony was 3 darts away from the magic ‘9 Darter’ in the recent Crumlin News cup but his form was no where near that now. Kevin’s was even less so and both players struggled to find any consistency. Eventually Tony did hit a double 5 after Kevin had missed double 16 and the tie was level again.

The match was far from over and Captain Kevin Mezza was giving it everything to restore the Archers’ lead. Opponent Gerard McClelland wasn’t putting up much of a resistance but Mez wasn’t waiting around either. He opened with a ton plus and followed that with a further two ton plus scores, and finished in 23 darts on a double 10.

Jamesy Bolton hasn’t any fond memories of meeting the Archers this season having been well beaten twice. This time around, Jamesy was well prepared and he threw excellent darts in his 23-dart win over Brian McKinney. The match was all square once more.

It was now best of three and Gary O’Reilly was next to throw. Joe Millar Jnr was unbeaten against the Archers but Gaz was in no mood to become the next scalp for Joe. From the off Gaz was in splendid form, hitting two ton-fortys and needing only 19 darts to win the leg.

The Archers have only gone on to win from this position once this year. All their hopes for a repeat were pinned on Kevin O’Reilly Snr as he played Sean Moran. After four throws Kevin had a slight lead but then Sean nipped in front with a ton and had first go at the double; he missed. Kevin had an easy out but left himself on double 1. Sean’s second attempt at winning the leg and forcing a decider was equally unsuccessful and Kevin took his double to put huge smiles on the faces of his Archers teammates.

The deciding game would have seen Michael O’Reilly Snr against Geordie Bolton Snr.

Man of the Match goes to Michael O’Reilly Jnr. He banished the doubts and broke his duck in fine style.

Edmund Rice Cup not coming home

The semi final and final rounds of the 2010 Edmund Rice cup were played out in the CB club on Wednesday night. The Archers had managed a rare cup win in the first round and now had the daunting task of facing auld enemy Sliabh Dubh for a place in the final.

First to toe the oche for the Archers was Captain Kevin Mezza against Joe McCoubrey Jnr. This was an extremely close game with neither player able to make a break until Joe followed a ton with a ton thirty. Joe’s next visit to the board saw him complete a 24-dart leg with a 36 finish.

Gary O’Reilly was next up and he faced Joe McCoubrey Snr. Gaz wasn’t able to get into the leg, throwing inconsistent darts and this wasn’t helped by Joe hitting ton plus scores. After 21 darts, Joe had the leg won and Sliabh Dubh had put some daylight between the teams.

There was some hope of a fight back when Kevin O’Reilly Snr started hitting the treble 19s against Seamy O’Brien. Kevin was showing his cool consistency and narrowly missed double ten for a 96 finish. However, he never got another chance as Seamy took out 60 for a 24-dart leg.

Another cup-tie was turning bad for the Archers as Michael O’Reilly Snr came to the board. Opponent Toss Cush, though, wasn’t on his darts and Michael was showing the kind of form his early season performances had promised. A reprieve was granted for the Archers when Michael hit a cracking 83 finish to round off the leg in 24 darts.

This seemed to spark a revival for the Archers as Michael O’Reilly Jnr matched Jim Kerr dart for dart in the next leg. Michael has been gaining in confidence with every game he plays but Jim is a seasoned thrower and he’s faced some big pressure situations before. This experience finally won it for Jim and the Sliabh Dubh were one game from the final.

Staring defeat in the face is an all too familiar tale for the Archers in the cups this season and the fat lady was warming her vocal chords once again. Hoping not to join her in a duet was John Black against Davy Parker Jnr. ‘Blackie’ was giving it everything he had but his darts were just off key and Davy eased to victory to put the Sliabh Dubh into yet another cup final.

It’ll have to be next year, again, for the Archers in their home competition.

Archers into semis after cup blitz

The second cup of the New Year was held in the Caulfields club on Wednesday and the CB Archers were playing the Sloans against whom they have a good record this season. For the betting man though, the Archers’ poor cup form was enough to make this an intriguing tie.

Kevin O’Reilly Jnr opened the match with a ton but couldn’t sustain the high scoring allowing opponent Brian Magee to get his nose in front. Further weak scores from Kevin all but handed the leg to Brian and had he been more clinical on his doubles, then Sloans would have taken an early lead. As it was, Kevin stole the victory from the jaws of defeat.

A twitchy start and Gary O’Reilly did little to calm the nerves when he faced Charlie Curley next. Charlie looked to have secured the leg when he had three darts at double top. However, all three darts landed high and Gaz wasn’t going to give him another chance taking out double 16 with his second throw.

So the Archers had a comfortable lead going into Billy Davidson’s game with Patrick Slavin. Billy was not at his best but was still too good for Patrick, even having the luxury of busting going for his double and the Archers were sitting pretty at 3 legs to nil.

Captain Kevin Mezza got out of his sick bed for tonight’s match and he threw a Captain’s game against Colm Clarke. Despite going through a box of tissues, Mez keep his hand steady and landed double 16 to put the Archers 1 leg from the semi finals.

The match was only 25 minutes old when Michael O’Reilly Snr stood up to play Gerard Matthews. This was a close, entertaining game but Michael will be disappointed he didn’t convert his high scores into victory and Gerard made him pay for missing his doubles with a double 4 to win the leg.

The Archers were still only one game away from winning the match when Brian McKinney faced Paddy Magee. Brian got the early advantage in the leg and never looked like losing it from there. Even a dreaded double 3 was no obstacle and the Archers had completed a whirlwind victory.

Thankful for not having to throw were:

John Black v Joe Dempsey

Michael O’Reilly Jnr v Kieran Robinson

Kevin O’Reilly Snr v Stephen Caughey.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin Mezza for a competent display against a trick opponent while suffering man-flu.

Archers show good and bad sides in

B Mooney Cup

Finals night of the B Mooney cup took place in the Caulfields club on Wednesday night and the Archers were up against The Orient Bar. The Orient had put the Archers out of the J Dempsey cup at the same stage back in December, so there was a bit of revenge on the agenda. Add to that the prospect of playing either fellow title hopefuls, Caulfields or auld enemy Sliabh Dubh in the final and the Archers had a lot to play for.

Kevin O’Reilly Jnr was first up and he wasted little time in despatching Joe Millar Snr with a couple of ton plus scores and a great 52 finish to give the Archers the perfect start.

Kevin O’Reilly Snr followed on and, although not as spectacular as Kevin Jnr, kept the ball rolling with a steady win over Kevin O’Neill.

The third O’Reilly in a row, Michael Snr, couldn’t match brother and nephew and succumbed to the better finishing of Liam Millar to put a halt to the Archers’ strong start.

For most of the fourth game of the night, John Black was one dart away from increasing the Archers’ lead. Nevertheless, opponent Paul Morgan never gave up hope and took advantage of Blackie’s missed doubles to land a double ten and level the match.

Back to square one for Michael O’Reilly Jnr and Geordie Bolton Jnr. Michael threw some nice scores in the leg and showed calm nerves in taking out double 8 to edge the Archers in front again.

The Orient were now relying on the big hitting Cricky Magee to draw them level but Gary O’Reilly was in no mood to be beaten and he sailed to victory with a 40 checkout.

This brought up top Archer Billy Davidson and a win over Sean Moore would claim a final place. The leg was never in doubt despite Billy busting a few times on his way to a double 1. The Archers were in the final.

Mere spectators were:

Kevin Mezza v Davy McCusker

Brian McKinney v Anto Moore.

Man of the Match goes to Kevin O’Reilly Jnr for the perfect start with some excellent darts.

B. Mooney Cup

 Final

-  C.B. Archers 1 Vs 5 Slaibh Dubh  -

Wednesday 10th  February 2010

The Archers have no good cup memories involving the Sliabh Dubh this season having already been beaten in two semis and it looked like business as usual when Kevin O’Reilly Jnr let slip a good lead against Kevin Campbell who hit double top for a 26-dart leg.

Semi final winner Billy Davidson got the Archers back on even keel when he steamrollered Seamy O’Brien in 25 darts including 3 ton plus scores.

However, that was all she wrote as the Archers dropped the next four legs for an all too familiar cup defeat. First of these was Michael O’Reilly Snr, suffering his second defeat of the night. Mick was the better scorer during the game but John Moore was the better finisher.

Next on the chopping block was John Black. Double trouble was Blackie’s downfall and he had to concede to Joe McCoubrey Jnr’s determined finishing.

Brian McKinney has never come close to beating Jim Kerr in all their previous meetings. Brian is still winless but he had darts for the leg after Jim had narrowly missed a 158 checkout. He should have been more clinical as Jim didn’t waste his next chance and the Sliabh Dubh were one leg from the cup.

Trying to stem the flow of defeats and prolong the match by at least one more game was Michael O’Reilly Jnr. Michael had a good win earlier in the night but his opponent, Davy Parker, has bags of experience and this is what got him over the finishing line when the pair traded darts at the double.

The history books will show a 5-1 hammering, though anyone watching would say it was a very close match.

Straining at the leash were:

Gary O’Reilly v Joe McCoubrey Snr

Kevin Mezza v Peter Matthews

Kevin O’Reilly Snr v John Matthews

Man of the Match goes to Billy D. A class act.

Mixed fortunes for the Archers threesomes

The first round of the 3-a-Side competition was held in the Sliabh Dubh club on Wednesday night and the Archers were drawn to play the first three matches.

                               CB Archers B 1 v 2 Orient E

The first darts thrown in the contest were Kevin O’Reilly Snr as he faced off against Paul Scott. Kevin is used to finishing first but he’s not such a fan of throwing first game and, although he didn’t throw all that badly, this may have accounted for Paul easing to victory.

Michael O’Reilly Jnr’s game against Tony Parker was pivotal; a missed double and the Archers were out. Luckily for the Archers, Michael demonstrated he has an old head on young shoulders and he held off the challenge of Tony to force a decider.

The third game between Brian McKinney and Joe Millar Jnr followed the same pattern as their previous meeting. Neither player could steal a march on the other and when Brian missed double top for the win, Joe grabbed the opportunity and nailed a double four to put the Orient through to the next round.

                               CB Archers C 2 v 0 Sloans D

The second match of the night featured Archers’ new boy Finton Carson. The youngster was not overawed by the occasion, appearing to actually relish his moment in the spotlight against Brian Magee. Finn took everything Brian had to offer and brushed it off. Only a bit of a wobble on his double made this leg appear a close call.

John Black against Patrick Slavin was an interesting match up next. Both players are capable of great darts, yet at times they can test the patience of the watching crowd. This time it was somewhere in between. Blackie got off to a flyer but eased up and let Patrick back in to the leg and only got a chance to hit double 16 after Patrick had missed his double.

                          CB Archers A 2 v 0 TLTA B

There was a bit of revenge to be had for the Archers in the third match of the night after suffering a hammering at the hands of the TLTA last week in the league. Billy Davidson set about righting some wrongs against Liam Flannery. Billy started with a bang but found the doubles a bit more elusive than the trebles. If Liam had have been a bit sharper the result may have been different. Nevertheless, Billy hit a double 15 for the win.

Captain Kevin Mezza was slower out of the blocks than Billy when he took on Paul McMenamin and for a while the result hung in the balance. Paul showed dogged determination but in the end Mez stood tall and split a double 16 to win the game and match.

Enjoying the atmosphere were:

For the C Team - Michael O’Reilly Snr v Gerard Michaels

For the A Team - Gary O’Reilly v Joe Flannery

Man of the Match awards:

Michael O’Reilly Jnr. Showed his team mates how its done.

John Black. He summoned up the win with true fighting spirit.

Kevin Mezza. Another Captain’s performance.

Joy and Pain for Archers trios

Finals night for the Jock Cush 3-a-sides were played out on Wednesday night and both remaining Archers’ teams rode the rollercoaster that is the Archers’ cup exploits this season.

                      CB Archers C 0 v 2 Sliabh Dubh C

The first to fall was rising star Fintan Carson. Finn was up against John Matthews who had brought his A game. Try as he might, Finn wasn’t able to repeat his success from the first round.

Next up was John Black against John Moore. ‘Irish Man’ Moore is a bogey player for Blackie and so it was on the night that the trend continued and the C team were out of the competition.

                         CB Archers A 2 v 1 Sloans A

Around the same time as the C team were bowing out, the A team were getting started with Billy Davison leading off against Ciaran Matthews. Ciaran has shown a lot of promise this season but no one would have predicted that he would have gotten the better of Billy in a game of missed doubles.

The pressure was instantly on Captain Kevin Mezza as he faced Steven Cagney. All the fears were quickly banished though when Mez, at one stage a whisker away from a 17 darter, finished the leg on double 6 for a 23 dart win.

This brought up Gary O’Reilly and Joe Dempsey to battle it out in a one-leg winner takes all game. Normally Joe makes his opponents work hard for their win but it wasn’t happening on the night and Gaz pushed the Archers through to the quarters.

               CB Archers A 2 v 1 TLTA C – Quarter Final

For the second week in a row the Archers took on a team from the TLTA and for the second match in a row Billy Davidson was first to throw. Just to keep the ‘two-in-a-row’ theme going, Billy wasted some golden opportunities – even busting going for a 96 finish – to gift Kevin Mallon the opening leg.

Gary O’Reilly was now in the hot seat against Sambo Ramsey. However, just like his Captain from the previous match Gary stood tall and took out 80 for a 21-dart leg.

Picking up were Gary left off, Kevin Mezza over came a slow start against Marty McDaid to record a fine 24 dart leg, finishing on 48.

                CB Archers A 0 v 2 Orient H – Semi Final

The first game of the semi final saw Gary O’Reilly play Davy McCusker. It appeared that Gary had used up all his good darts in the previous two rounds as he followed high scores with low scores and when he busted going for the win, Davy took only two darts at double top to put the Orient in front.

This was familiar territory for the Archers in the tournament and Kevin Mezza has been here before. Nevertheless, Jamesy Bolton wasn’t going to give Kevin the chance to force another decider and he set about building a lead. Kevin, like Gary, alternated high and low scores and after 21 darts and a double 10 from Jamesy the game and match was over.

Not breaking sweat were:

For the C Team - Michael O’Reilly Snr v Davy Parker

For the A Team – Billy Davidson v Geordie Bolton (semi finals)

Man of the Match awards:

Kevin Mezza. A big game was needed and produced in the second round.

Gary O’Reilly. Threw one of the games of the night in the quarters.

Archers boss doubles in new cup competition

For the first time in the Divis league, a competition was held under Double-in, Double-out rules. In this format, players must hit a double to start the game and won’t score until they have done so. After that, the game follows the normal rules with players finishing on a double to win the game.

The Archers had drawn the Sloans in the first round for the second cup tournament in a row and leading off was Captain Kevin Mezza. Kevin was up against Patrick Slavin and both players had no problem hitting their opening double at the first attempt. That was as close as Patrick got with ‘Big Mez’, sporting the new Archers’ team shirt, running away with the game including a couple of useful 117s.

Billy Davidson faced Paddy Bell next and again neither player had much trouble nailing the first double. The game then descended into a battle for the double and each player in turn either busted or landed three darts on the wire of the final double. Billy busted one too many times and Paddy gratefully accepted the opportunity to take out double nine for the win.

In the third game Kevin O’Reilly Jnr stole a march on opponent Stephen Caughey who took a few attempts to hit his starting double. Kevin made the most of this and although Stephen eventually got in to a rhythm with a couple of ton plus scores, he had left himself too much to do and Kevin put the Archers back in front.

The Archers moved even further in front when Gary O’Reilly played Charlie Curley. Gary replied to Charlie’s opening double 5 with double 16 and then two tons, 22 darts and a double top later Gary had the game won.

Brian McKinney’s game against Thomas Slavin was a very close affair. The opening double posed no problems at the start of the leg, but at the end of it, Brian missed double 16 for a 105 finish and Thomas missed double top for a 117 checkout. Brian didn’t risk giving Thomas another shot and on his next visit to the board, two darts at double 4 were enough for the victory.

Two of the most promising youngsters contested what turned out to be the deciding game next. Fiontan Carson has settled in well with his Archers team mates and Ciaran Matthews has impressed on his outings for the Sloans. When the game finally got under way, Fionn and Ciaran put on a decent display of scoring. However, the Archers will be in the semis after Fionn landed a double 16 to take the win.

Wide-eyed with wonder were:

John Black v Jim Dempsey

Michael O’Reilly Jnr v Gerard Matthews

Michael O’Reilly Snr v Kieran Robinson

Man of the Match goes to Gary O’Reilly for a masterful display.

C.B.Archers 5 Vs 1 Orient Star

Wednesday 31st March 2010

The E Murphy Cup, played under the double-in/double-out format, reached its conclusion with the semi-final and final rounds played to a finish on Wednesday night in the Sliabh Dubh club.

                                      CB Archers 5 v 1 Orient Star

The Archers’ first obstacle in the way of a possible maiden cup win was the Orient Star and leading off were Captain Kevin Mezza and Joe Millar Snr. Both players got straight off the mark on the first throw. Big Mez then pulled away with the better accuracy and finished off with a double 2.

Brian McKinney and Geordie Bolton Jnr had no problem with their opening double; it was on the finishing double that they came unstuck. The leg in general was a nervy affair, low scoring and with missed doubles. Brian just got the nod when he landed the dreaded double 1 to extend the Archers’ lead.

Recently returned to the Archers, Marty Currie is still regaining the form that had seen him top the player of the year table. Davy McCusker is not the easy game you need while trying to get your game back on track and he stunned Marty with an opening 112. Marty kept his cool, though, and when he needed a big score he got one with a magnificent 116 check out.

The only casualty for the Archers in this match was John Black when he lost to Liam Millar. After the starting doubles were out of the way, the scoring was very even up until the last third of the leg when Liam hit a few better scores. This allowed him the time to get down to his double and despatch it without any fuss.

A hand injury kept Kevin O’Reilly Snr out of the first round and he faced a tough challenge in Cricky Magee. Each player in turn threw what could have been a game breaker throw only to see their opponent match or better the score. It was a race to the double, a race Kevin won with a mighty double ten and the Archers were one game away from the final.

The task of getting that final place fell to Gary O’Reilly against Paul Morgan.  The game got under way with ease but Paul quickly showed he would be no push over with consistant scoring. Gaz to hit a big 134 to leave himself on a finish but Paul had first throw at the double, and bust. Gaz gratefully took the opportunity to close out the leg and match with a double top.

The ‘If-Onlys' were:

In the Semi Final

Billy Davidson v Anto Moore; Kevin O’Reilly Jnr v Paddy Dempster; Fiontan Carson v Sean Moore.

Man of the Match awards go to:

The Semi Final – Marty Currie. Only a couple of games back, but what a check out.

C.B.Archers 2 Vs 5 Caulfields

Wednesday 31st March 2010

                                          CB Archers 2 v 5 Caulfields

The final would see a new champion crowned as neither the Archers nor Caulfields had won a cup this season, not counting the 5-a-sides, which isn’t a full team competition.

Young Fiontan Carson got proceedings under way against Paddy McConville. On another day and another board, Fionn would have won this game but it was Paddy’s turn to get the win and he checked out in style with a neat 56 finish.

Captain Kevin Mezza took on Micky Grady next and Big Mez was most unlucky in this leg. For most of the game, it looked like the Archers would get back on level terms but a cruel bust on his double by Mez allowed Micky in to take out double 20 and extend Caulfields’ lead.

John Black found no respite from his losing streak when he faced Stevie Dee in the next game. Blackie threw a much-improved game but he was playing a top quality opponent and Stevie’s big scoring during the leg afforded him the luxury of a couple of slip-ups before taking out double 2 for the victory.

Caulfields captain Micky Martin could have turned the screws even further on the Archers except he found Gary O’Reilly in superb form. Although Micky was steady and consistant, Gaz was wasting no time to get the Archers back in to this match and a couple of tons led to a double 8 checkout.

Another step on the way to saving the match for the Archers was taken by Kevin O’Reilly Snr when he got the better of Danny Boyle. Kevin was quickly off the mark and was never headed in the game that saw him narrowly miss double ten for a 140 finish. He didn’t miss on his next throw and there was only a game between the teams.

Unfortunately the Archers’ mini revival was cut short by Hugh McMullan in his win over Kevin O’Reilly Jnr. Kevin found himself with a lot to do early on but he never gave up and was so close to nicking the leg. After a few misses, Hugh shut the door with a double 5.

The Archers’ Billy Davidson knew he couldn’t make any mistakes against Gerard Boyle next. However, Gerard wasn’t waiting for mistakes and he powered to a 49 checkout finishing on double 16. Caulfields were the inaugural Double-in/Double-out champions.

The ‘If-Onlys' were:

In the Final

Brian McKinney v Seamy Roberts; Marty Currie v Paddy O’Neill.

Man of the Match awards go to:

The Final – Gary O’Reilly. A great win under difficult circumstances.

C.B. Archers 1 Vs 5 Caulfields

Last Cup hope gone for shorthanded Archers

The last team cup of the season came and went in a flash for the Archers on Wednesday in the Orient Bar. Their opponents, Caulfields, had the luxury of two guaranteed wins due to the Archers missing a couple of their star players.

As luck would have it, one of those games was drawn first when Kevin O’Reilly Jnr, missing due to work commitments, was picked out to play Stevie Dee Jnr. So Caulfields had an early lead.

The first darts thrown in anger came from Billy Davidson against Seamy Roberts. Billy hit a ton and a ton forty in this game but couldn’t put Seamy away and Seamy’s lower scoring, but more consistent, darts saw him through to a double 8 to double Caulfields’ lead.

Gary O’Reilly steadied the ship somewhat when he got the better of Caulfields captain Micky Martin. Gaz was right on the money scoring a ton and a 123, and then having no trouble with a 12 checkout to get the Archers on the scoreboard.

The chance to tie the match fell to John Black when he faced off against Paddy O’Neill. Unfortunately for the Archers, John just wasn’t in the game and he could do nothing but watch as Paddy took out 55 for a neat 22-dart leg.

Young Fionn Carson had a tough tussle with Paddy McConville with both players shooting high and low through out the leg. The pressure was on Fionn as his team were 3-1 down and heading toward the nearest exit. Paddy was giving it everything too and when Fionn let him in at the double, Paddy took just two darts to nail 18s.

And that was all there was because the next game was the second bye of the night with Marty Currie not making it to the oche on time giving Micky Grady a walk over and the match to Caulfields 5 legs to 1.

Cursing the draw were:

Captain Mez v Hugh McMullan

Brian McKinney v Danny Boyle

Kevin O’Reilly Snr v Gerard Boyle
