Edmund Branney Cup

First Round

16 November 2007

Archers 5 defeat Darks 5 to win Edmund Branney

C.B Archers A 2 vs. 3 C.B Archers B

During the Team Selection we came up with the idea of naming or strongest team as Archers B in the hope that we could catch someone of hand. That back fired big time as the first round match was C.B Archers B vs. C.B Archers A. Both teams turned up with 4 players and the draw was made with the last game working out a bye for both teams. The B team were shocked when Paul Reynolds and Big Cousin Joe were both well beaten by Big Chris McMaster and Brain McKinney Kevin O’Reilly was lucky to scrap past Francie Mezza. Next game was the big grudge match as Big Mick Mezza was hoping to be drawn against younger brother Kevin and with Big Mick promising allsorts was left stunned and sitting on 336 when Kevin hit his double to tie the game 2-2. To say Big Mick was discussed would be an understatement. So with the game tied at 2 – 2 and both teams only having 4 players each they had to nominate a player and up stepped both captains in Kevin Mezza and Brain McKinney. Again Kevin Mezza on top form left his opponent standing and the B team moved into the next round.

Second Round

But the Darks got of the mark with Johnny Dark beating Paul Reynolds. The Archers travelling fans went mad when Joe Reynolds beat Marty McCrystal Snr to lift the cup.

Billy O Neill Perpetual Cup

First Round

C.B Archers 1 vs. 4 Sliabh Dubh

Both teams at this point in the season had won all the cups to date and it was a pity there had to be a loser in this one. Sliabh Dubh Captain Peter Mathews was over heard saying before the game started that we owe these guys one and he was right. The Dubh got of to a flyer winning the first two games with Big Chris McMaster and Kevin Mezza on the end of a dubbing. Kevin O'Reilly got one back for the Archers but that was there lot as Big Mick Mezza and Brain McKinney failed to hit the there doubles.

Jimmy Wilson Cup

First Round

St Johns 2 Vs. 4 CB Archers

The Archers got the start they wanted when big Chris McMaster got the better of Danny Keatings 2-0 in 25 and 26 darts. Kevin O’Reilly missed doubles against young Gerard Holmes which proved costly with young Gerard just nicking the win. The Archers then went 3-1 up with good wins from Martin Currie and Kevin Mezza. St Johns pulled one back as ex Archer Brain McKinney took big Mick Mezza apart in perhaps Brain best game of the year. But that was it for St Johns as Gary O’Reilly beat the very experienced St Johns Captain Bobby McStravick who was one up and had his changes to win but Gaz showed how good he is by hitting that all important double.

Second Semi-final

Caulfield’s Star 3 Vs. 4 CB Archers

The second semi-final was between Caulfield’s Star and the CB Archers. This is one match the Caulfield’s should have won; they were 3-1 up but just couldn’t get over the line. It shows the fighting quality of this Archers team who dug deep and pulled off a brilliant victory 4-3.

Their winners were Paul Reynolds 2-1, Gary O’Reilly 2-1, Martin Currie 2-1 and a great anchor man in Kevin Mezza 2-1 over Geordie Bolton Jnr, Anto Moore, Sean Moore and Geordie Bolton (Snr).

There is no number of darts on the card so man of the match goes to the man who served it up, Kevin Mezza (17 Darts last leg)

The Final

Well the Archers got off to the Star they wanted, when young Martin Currie beat Patrick O’Neill 2-0 in 24 and 23 darts.

Archers).  The Holders from St John's Star had to pull out all the stops to defeat the O Reilly brothers 2 - 1 in 22 and 21 darts.  The O Reilly’s didn’t through as well as they can but still put up a good fight leading the match with a 21 darter and having a dart to win the match.

Next up for the Archers was Martin (Hot-stuff) Currie and Kevin (Special K) Mezza taking on not one but two individual champions in Toss Cush (who holds the highest finish this season 151) and his partner Kevin (soupy) Campbell (Who hit the big 180 last week).  But the Ex Champs went down 2 - 0 with hot stuff and Special K only needing one dart at the double in both legs.

The Last game for the Archers was eagerly awaited between Jim Kerr and Davy Parker of the Sliabh Dubh against the old hand Kevin O Reilly Snr and Chris Mc Master.  This was probably the tightest game of the night with both teams having there chances but the Sliabh Dubh outfit coming out on top. 2 - 0 It could have been a very different story but it just wasn’t to be.

We couldn’t believe it looking at the match card we new the draw suited us and we could easily go two if not three up. It was a right shock. The Archers got their heads down and took the next two games with good wins from Joe Reynolds 2-0 in 26 and 25 darts and Chris McMaster 2-1 over Joe McCoubrey Jnr and Peter Mathews (24).

But it was soon over as Joe McCoubrey Snr beat Kevin O’Reilly Jnr 2-0 in 22 and 24 darts. So that was it. The come back was over and so was the game. C.B. Archers 6 Vs 1 Caulfield’s Star

The hosts were in high sprits this week knowing that they were closing in on the league title. We were hot favourites to win this one and with Marty (Hotstuff) Currie, Joe Reynolds, and Gaz O’Reilly all hitting the big the Archers fancied themselves to stay top of the league.

The game got under way and the Archers got on a roll winning the first five games with Martin Currie, Joe Reynolds, Kevin O’Reilly, Paul Reynolds and Gaz O’Reilly all winning comfortably. Big Chris McMaster was unlucky and lost his game 2-0 ending any hopes of a white wash. Kevin Mezza was up last and he dispensed of young Darren Bolton to end an easy night for the Archers.

St Johns Star 6 – 1 C.B Archers

Archers Fall At Final Hurdle

The Archers travelled to the St Johns GAA Club this week knowing that a win would mean they would be the League Champions in there first year. But it just wasn’t meant to be. Things looked well when Gary (Gaz) O’Reilly started well with a 2-1 win. But that was it as the Star destroyed the Archers by winning the next six on the bounce living a bitter taste in the mouths of Kevin Mezza, Kevin O’Reilly Jnr, Marty Currie, Joe Reynolds, Chris McMaster and Paul Reynolds. With the Sliabh Dubh winning there last match it meant that there would be a play off for the league title.

League Play-off

Sliabh Dubh Public House

This one was going to be a cracker with very little separating these two sides all year. The Sliabh Dubh started well winning the first game as young Paul Reynolds couldn’t cope with Big Joe McCoubrey Snr. The Archers soon got one back with Marty Currie beating Peter Mathews 2-0. The Sliabh Dubh reeled of another two wins when Joe Reynolds and Big Kevin O’Reilly missed doubles. Could the Archer come back form 3-1 down you better believe it. Gary O’Reilly stepped up to put another score on the board for the Archers and Kevin Mezza made 3-3. the last game came down to big Chris McMaster who just didn’t get going at all and the League title stayed in west Belfast and the Sliabh are now the Eastwood Telebet Divis Dart League Champions.

Many will say the Sliabh Dubh won the league but we the Archers know we lost it. We had our chances and just didn’t take them. Its like the saying goes you can’t buy experience and the experience we gathered this year will hold us in good stead for years to come. The Archers will return and they will be bigger and better than ever.
